Ho Chi Minh City at Night: Travel Experience with mr.hotsia

If you think Ho Chi Minh City, commonly called Saigon by locals, is just a busy big city during the day, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share from my real experience that the city's nighttime charm is different and more intriguing than you might expect.

After arriving at the airport and settling into my accommodation in the late afternoon, I chose to stay in the city center area for easy access to markets and local restaurants, similar to what I've experienced in other provinces of Vietnam, such as Vinh Long, where I stayed at the Hoang Son hotel in the city center, conveniently close to the market, much like the lively night market atmosphere in Ho Chi Minh City. Lights and Nightlife of Ho Chi Minh City

After sunset, many streets in Ho Chi Minh City light up brightly with colorful neon lights. Shops, restaurants, and small bars pop up in every alley. I walked along Bui Vien Street, known as the most popular night walking street. Whether you like to sip cold beer or try new foods, this street has it all.

For me, mr.hotsia, exploring street food in this area is the highlight of the night because the Vietnamese food here is fresh and very affordable. For example, grilled button squid, which I tried from a street vendor. The young owner grilled the squid over hot charcoal, filling the air with fragrant smoke. The taste was unique and so enjoyable that I had to order more. (Watch my Vietnamese grilled button squid video hereVietnamese Grilled Button Squid)

Night Market and Local Lifestyle

Not far from the walking street, I went to the night market where locals and tourists gather to buy fresh produce and various foods. The market is filled with the sounds of bargaining mixed with the unique aromas of Vietnamese herbs and spices. Passing by fruit stalls, I found sweet ripe mangoes and freshly made Vietnamese desserts every day.

I really enjoy seeing this way of life because it makes me feel like I’m truly experiencing the reality of this city, different from just visiting arranged tourist spots.

Dinner and Dining Experience with mr.hotsia

For dinner in Ho Chi Minh City, I often choose to try Vietnamese chicken biryani, which is slightly different from our local version. It has a distinctive Vietnamese spice aroma and is served with a spicy dipping sauce that pairs perfectly. (I also made a video eating Vietnamese chicken biryani; those who like Vietnamese food can check it out hereVietnamese Chicken Biryani)

Most restaurants in this area have simple seating, sometimes small plastic chairs set up by the roadside, but the atmosphere is warm and more authentic than fancy hotel restaurants. Tasting local food while listening to people passing by in small alleys is an experience mr.hotsia highly recommends.

Travel and Important Tips in Ho Chi Minh City

Getting around Ho Chi Minh City at night is convenient with taxis and motorbike taxis, but I recommend using reliable taxi companies like Mai Linh, which I have used in other cities such as Vinh Long (read about my travel experience atVinh Long bus station) to avoid communication problems that might lead you to the wrong place.

Additionally, preparing a 3G internet SIM card helps you communicate and find information more easily in this big city. I have recommended how to manage SIM cards in an articleVietnam 3G Internet SIMso you won’t miss any news or travel routes.

Connect Your Experience with Other Provinces in Vietnam

If you have more time, traveling to nearby provinces is a great idea. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Vinh Long Province, which has beautiful mountains and cool weather, perfect for those wanting a break from the city bustle. For sea lovers, don’t miss visiting Nha Trang sea beach, which has a long beach and clear water. I experienced the calm nighttime atmosphere there, very different from the lively Ho Chi Minh City. (Read moreNha Trang sea beach)
