Tay People's Cuisine at Ban Ho, Sapa City, Northern Vietnam
Hello, I'm Mr.Hotsia. Today, I will take friends to experience the atmosphere and taste of the local food of the Tay people at Ban Ho, located in Sapa city in northern Vietnam. This trip was a profound and impressive experience because I met and talked directly with the Tay people and tasted traditional dishes that are not easily found in big cities.
Ban Ho is a small village situated amidst the mountains and beautiful nature of Sapa. Here, the Tay people still firmly preserve their lifestyle and culture. Although tourists occasionally visit, the village retains its authentic local charm. I, Mr.Hotsia, arrived here in the morning; the atmosphere was fresh and the cool mountain air was familiar and pleasant.
Getting to Know the Tay People and Their Lifestyle in Ban Ho
The Tay are an ethnic group native to several areas in northern Vietnam and parts of neighboring countries such as Thailand, Laos, and China. I spoke with the Tay locals here, most of whom speak a mix of Tay and Vietnamese well, and some also speak Thai, making communication relatively easy.
The Tay people's lifestyle remains simple and closely connected to nature. They practice sustainable agriculture, growing rice, vegetables, and raising livestock. Most houses are made of wood with roofs thatched with grass or bamboo, giving a warm and truly rustic charm.
Tay People's Cuisine: Dishes I, Mr.Hotsia, Must Try
The Tay food at Ban Ho stands out with fresh ingredients sourced from the mountains and local area, such as sticky rice, herbal chili paste, fish caught from streams, and home-raised meat. The flavors are sour, salty, and mildly spicy, perfectly blended with the aroma of local herbs.
A dish I was very impressed with is “Sticky Rice Wrapped in Banana Leaves,” made from white sticky rice mixed with beans and spices, then steamed in banana leaves until fragrant. Another must-try is “Tay Curry,” a curry with pork or fish cooked with local herbs, offering a rich and balanced flavor. I also tried homemade pickled vegetables and chili paste, which amazingly enhanced the meal's taste.
Additionally, there is “Grilled Fish,” cooked over low charcoal to give a unique aroma, and “Boiled Eggs in Hot Mineral Water,” a traditional Tay method of preparing eggs. I witnessed all the food preparation myself and shared the meal with a very kind Tay family. It was a warm and joyful time.
Market Atmosphere and Traveling in Sapa
After enjoying the Tay food, I, Mr.Hotsia, visited the local market in Sapa. Here, fresh produce and mountain fruits are sold, along with local handicrafts such as handwoven fabrics, silverware, and various souvenirs. The Sapa market is a lively meeting place for various ethnic groups, including the Tay, exchanging goods and culture.
For traveling to Ban Ho and Sapa, I chose to use local transportation passing through mountain routes and small villages. The scenery along the way was beautiful, with lush green rice fields and light mist covering the mountain peaks, compared to Lang Son city where I have been before.Lang Son Province, VietnamBan Ho and Sapa offer a noticeably quieter and more natural atmosphere.
