Eating Vietnamese fried bananas in Thanh Hóa, a small city with big flavors
When you think of Vietnam, many people probably think of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Lat. But for me, mr.hotsia, traveling to less talked about cities likeThanh Hóaturns out to be an unforgettable food and drink experience, especially with a simple dish like “Vietnamese fried bananas” that I tried on a small street in this city.
Thanh Hóa is not as bustling as the big cities in northern or southern Vietnam, but it has a rustic charm blended seamlessly with the daily life of Vietnamese people. I traveled here from Lang Son city, which is not far away (Lang Son Province, Vietnam) to discover unique local foods, and Vietnamese fried bananas were one of them.
Vietnamese Fried Bananas – The Perfect Sweet Aroma
The fried bananas here are different from the Thai-style ones that are fried until dry and crispy like a snack. The Vietnamese version is juicy with ripe bananas, crispy outside and soft inside, and has the fresh aroma of newly fried oil. I walked along a small street with many fried banana vendors; the fragrant smell of oil hit my nose as soon as I passed by.
What I liked about Vietnamese fried bananas is that they are coated with a thin batter that fries to just the right crispiness without being greasy, and the sweetness is perfectly balanced. It’s not heavy at all. Plus, there’s a slightly sour Vietnamese dipping sauce served alongside, which adds a lot of dimension to the flavor.
I sat eating fried bananas while watching people shopping in the morning market of Thanh Hóa, seeing a simple yet charming rural northern Vietnamese lifestyle. This place resembles other local towns like Lang Son province that I have visited, but the warm feeling and harmony with local food here are much stronger.
Strolling and Tasting Food at Thanh Hóa Morning Market
After enjoying the fried bananas, I continued exploring Thanh Hóa’s morning market. The market isn’t very large but is full of fresh produce, fruits, and Vietnamese foods rarely found elsewhere. I found a Vietnamese chicken biryani stall that looked very tempting, similar to our chicken biryani but with different spices. There was also fragrant grilled button squid with spices filling the air, almost irresistible (Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid)
Traveling to Thanh Hóa is not difficult; you can conveniently take a bus from big cities like Hanoi or Lang Son. The city is not crowded like major tourist cities, making mr.hotsia feel like truly experiencing the real life of northern Vietnamese people from a rarely shared perspective.
Thanh Hóa and the Overview of Northern Vietnam
Thanh Hóa is one of several cities that clearly reflect the lifestyle and culture of northern Vietnam, similar to what I experienced in Lang Son province (Lang Son Province, Vietnam) which has hot and humid summers and rainy seasons like ours. The Ky Cung River flows through the city, making the atmosphere much fresher.
If you enjoy deep local lifestyle travel and like eating street food that isn’t overly processed, I recommend stopping by Thanh Hóa and trying the simple yet extraordinary “Vietnamese fried bananas.”
mr.hotsia’s Experience with Vietnamese Fried Bananas
For me, mr.hotsia, eating Vietnamese fried bananas in Thanh Hóa was like opening a door to the world of authentic Vietnamese home cooking, which isn’t just fresh vegetables or pho but also carefully made fried dishes. I still remember the shop owner was a true local, and we had a friendly chat. I learned that Vietnamese fried bananas have a special batter recipe passed down through generations.
After eating, I also stopped by a nearby market to observe people’s lifestyles and buy small seasonal fruit souvenirs. It was a trip full of impressive moments and warm feelings.
Summary of Thanh Hóa and Vietnamese Fried Bananas’ Appeal
Thanh Hóa may not be a famous tourist city, but it is full of rustic charm that food travelers like mr.hotsia should not miss. This plate of Vietnamese fried bananas represents simple yet memorable local food. If you visit northern Vietnam, don’t forget to stop by Thanh Hóa and try Vietnamese fried bananas. I guarantee you will have a different experience from typical tours.
