Thanh Hóa Roast Duck from Northern Vietnam | A must-try delicacy

When it comes to Northern Vietnamese cuisine, many people think of the bustling atmospheres of big cities like Hanoi or Sapa. But for mr.hotsia, the charm of Vietnamese food is also hidden in several lesser-known provinces. One of these is “Thanh Hóa Roast Duck,” a signature dish from Thanh Hóa city that I had the chance to experience myself, and I must say it’s so delicious that I want everyone to try it.

Thanh Hóa is a city located in the north-central region of Northern Vietnam. Anyone who has read my stories aboutLang Son Provincewill understand the atmosphere of a small town that still preserves the traditional lifestyle of Northern Vietnamese people very well. Although this city is neither luxurious nor a main tourist destination, its food culture has a unique charm, especially the famous Thanh Hóa roast duck known for its fragrant aroma, balanced flavor, and tender juicy duck meat.

Travel Experience and Tasting Thanh Hóa Roast Duck

Getting to Thanh Hóa is not difficult. I took about 3 hours from Hanoi by a local bus that was quite comfortable. Upon arriving in the city, the first thing that caught my attention was the aroma of roast duck wafting through the air from many roadside restaurants. I chose to try a famous roast duck shop recommended by locals.

At the shop, rows of roast ducks hung in front of the store with beautifully dark copper-colored skin. I ordered a large plate of roast duck with sticky rice and the shop’s special dipping sauce. The uniqueness of Thanh Hóa roast duck lies in its intense but balanced marinade that does not overpower the duck’s flavor. The skin is slightly crispy, the meat inside tender and juicy, and the dipping sauce has a perfect sweet, sour, and salty taste, making every bite feel balanced and refreshingly different from other roast ducks I’ve tried.

Connecting with Local Culture and Atmosphere

Besides the roast duck, strolling through Thanh Hóa’s morning market was a memorable experience for me. The market is lively, filled with fresh produce, fruits, and a variety of local foods. You’ll see locals shopping with smiles and friendliness. I have also written about Mukdahan morning market in Southern Vietnam, which has a different atmosphere but shares the vibrant life of a market.Mukdahan Morning Marketwhich I have visited

Thanh Hóa is also a city with plains and small mountains, similar to Lang Son Province that I visited earlier (Lang Son Province). The surroundings blend nature and local lifestyle harmoniously. When I visited, it was drizzling with cool weather, not too hot, perfect for walking and exploring the city.

Tips from mr.hotsia for Eating Thanh Hóa Roast Duck

If you plan to visit Thanh Hóa and want to try the roast duck here, I recommend going in the morning or late morning because most roast ducks are freshly made daily and sell out quickly. Eating duck here doesn’t require many side dishes; just hot sticky rice and the special dipping sauce highlight the duck’s flavor.

Additionally, I suggest combining the roast duck with other Vietnamese dishes like bánh mì or fresh vegetables sold nearby to add layers of flavor and freshness in one meal.
