Vietnam Dong: The Currency You Need to Know Before Traveling
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to get to know "Vietnam Dong" orVietnam Dong (VND)the main currency of Vietnam that many people may have seen but still find confusing in value, especially when traveling to Vietnam on your own like me, who has experienced many provinces firsthand.
Vietnam Dong seems to be an enormous amount because each banknote has many zeros. I, mr.hotsia, remember standing confused in front of a street food stall in Lang Son city, where I stayed. It is a province bordering China and one of the provinces with high mountains and a simple, warm local lifestyle. (Read more about Lang Son Province atLang Son Province Vietnam)
Easy Vietnam Dong Calculation Method by mr.hotsia
What I want to say first is don't mistakenly think that two hundred thousand dong equals two hundred baht. It’s not! The calculation method I use for dong to baht is to remove three zeros and then multiply by 3. For example, 1,000,000 dong equals 1,000 x 3 = 3,000 baht. In reality, exchange rates may vary, but this formula helps us quickly and easily estimate prices when bargaining in markets or street food stalls.
When shopping in Vietnam, I often hear the phrase "bao nhiêu," which means "how much?" If a seller says "hai trăm," that means 200,000 dong or about 300 baht. Remembering basic Vietnamese numbers helps a lot, such as 1 is "một," 2 is "hai," 3 "ba," 4 "bốn," 5 "năm," 6 "sáu," 7 "bảy," 8 "tám," 9 "chín," and 10 "mười."
Experience Using Vietnam Dong in Markets and Restaurants
When I walked through the market in Lang Son city, besides trying the famous roasted duck here, I also used Vietnam Dong to buy snacks and small souvenirs from local vendors who spoke little English, which made us use finger pointing and dong calculations in a fun way. Clearly, knowing the Vietnam Dong helps travelers move smoothly and avoid being overcharged.
If anyone is planning to travel to Northern Vietnam, I recommend stopping by Lang Son Province, which I have written about inLang Son Province ArticleBecause besides practicing using Vietnam Dong, you also get to experience the lifestyle and beautiful nature of the mountains and the Ky Cung River flowing through the city. Using Vietnam Dong here means more than just exchanging money.
Currency Exchange and Spending in Vietnam
Upon arriving at airports or bus stations in various cities, such as Vinh Long bus station, which I have used to travel to other cities in the Mekong Delta, exchanging Vietnam Dong is easy at banks or currency exchange shops widely available.
Remember that Vietnam Dong comes in many denominations, from 1,000 dong to 500,000 dong. I recommend carrying just enough and keeping it separated because some shops may not accept large bills, or carrying too much can make your wallet heavy.
Vietnam Dong and Traveling in Southern and Central Vietnam
Besides the north, I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Nha Trang, a famous tourist city with beautiful clean beaches and many activities (read more atNha Trang Sea Beach). During my visit, I used Vietnam Dong to buy fresh seafood and street snacks, as well as take a cable car to enjoy the view at Hon Tre Island. The prices were very reasonable compared to what I paid.
Also, if you are interested in budget travel, using Vietnam Dong properly will help you save expenses and enjoy shopping in fresh markets and walking streets fully.
