Vietnamese Summer Roll or Nam Neaung, a signature dish from Vietnam
When it comes to Vietnamese food that I, mr.hotsia, especially love, one dish I must recommend isVietnamese Summer Roll, known in Thailand as Nam Neaungwhich originates from southern Vietnam, especially Can Tho city, where I had the chance to experience the authentic original taste. I must say I was so impressed that I want to share it with everyone.
Previously, I tried Nam Neaung in Nong Khai and Luang Prabang, but neither the taste nor the ingredients fully satisfied me. However, when I tried it in Vietnam itself, I realized that authentic southern Vietnamese Nam Neaung is much more distinctive and profound than I had imagined.
The uniqueness of authentic Nam Neaung in Can Tho
In Can Tho, located in southern Vietnam, the special feature of Nam Neaung is that the pork is hand-shaped and grilled stick by stick over charcoal, giving it a traditional smoky aroma. The accompanying vegetables are not as varied as in Thailand but focus on fresh vegetables cut into about 2-inch pieces, such as lettuce, wild betel leaves, and raw banana as a key fruit to eat with.
The wrapper is a thin sheet of rice paper rolled together with grilled pork and fresh vegetables, without dipping in water like I have seen elsewhere. This creates a harmonious texture and flavor between the wrapper and the filling.
Lifestyle and food markets in Can Tho
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to stroll through the markets and walking streets of Can Tho, which are lined with dozens of Nam Neaung stalls to choose from. The street atmosphere here is relaxed and not as hectic as big cities, with locals happily buying and enjoying their food.
Besides Nam Neaung, I also tried grilled pork wrapped in wild betel leaves with a slightly sweet taste, grilled to fragrant tenderness, as well as sticky rice topped with fried chicken, a local favorite. However, I didn’t try it much because I was usually full from Nam Neaung.
Connecting the atmosphere with Lang Son Province
When talking about northern Vietnam, many might think of Lang Son Province, where I once stayed and experienced the mountain town lifestyle and local cuisine that are completely different.Lang Son ProvinceKnown for its roasted duck and peaceful atmosphere, but for Nam Neaung or Vietnamese Summer Roll that I tried in southern Vietnam, it has a fresher taste and a stronger street food vibe.
Nevertheless, tasting Nam Neaung in southern Vietnam helped me see the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine, with each region having its own unique and interesting characteristics.
Travel experience and advice for tourists
For anyone wanting to try authentic Nam Neaung like this, mr.hotsia recommends traveling to Can Tho city in southern Vietnam, which has markets and walking streets full of local food stalls. Travel planning might be needed as this city is not a main destination like Da Lat or Nha Trang, but once there, you will fully experience the true Vietnamese food culture.
Also, if you are interested in northern Vietnam travel, I have written about my experience inLang Son Provincewhich has a different but equally charming atmosphere.
