White Thai in Vietnam: Lifestyle and Culture in Mai Chau Town

I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel into the rural areas of northern Vietnam to experience the White Thai community settled in a small village by the mountains in Mai Chau town, Hoa Binh province. This community is fascinating not only because of its name but also because of the lifestyle and culture that remarkably preserve Thai identity despite being in Vietnamese territory.

This White Thai village is located in a high mountainous area filled with terraced rice fields and abundant nature. Getting here is not easy; one must travel on dirt roads and winding paths. But once entering the village, the warmth and friendliness of the people immediately made me forget my fatigue.

Language and Culture Preserved

What impressed me most was that the White Thai speak Thai fluently, both in daily life and in various ceremonies, although mixed with some Vietnamese. I had the chance to sit and talk with villagers, listening to the history of the White Thai who migrated here. Many said their ancestors came from northern Thailand and Laos and have settled here for over a hundred years.

Culturally, the White Thai continue to uphold Thai traditions strongly, including traditional clothing, folk games, and annual merit-making ceremonies similar to those in Thailand. I considered it a great opportunity to watch and learn directly from the locals.

Lifestyle and Living of the White Thai

Most White Thai still practice traditional farming, mainly growing sticky rice and cultivating kitchen gardens for their own use. Walking around the village, I saw a simple lifestyle filled with happiness and tranquility. Women in the community often wear brightly colored sinh skirts and uniquely patterned clothes.

The food here is simple but flavorful, such as grilled sticky rice, fermented fish chili paste, and Thai-style pork larb. I tried Vietnamese chicken biryani, which is similar to the Thai version but uses slightly different spices and herbs, adding a unique fragrant aroma that was very interesting. Travel and Surrounding Atmosphere

Although this village is not directly in Lang Son province, the atmosphere and geography are very similar. I have also traveled to Lang Son province (read more atLang Son Province, Vietnam), which features high mountains and rivers flowing through Lang Son city. It is also famous for delicious roast duck and beautiful nature, ideal for hiking and photography.

If you plan to visit the White Thai in Mai Chau village, I recommend preparing well for the journey and your physical condition, as the mountain roads can be quite challenging. But trust me, the natural beauty and warmth of the locals will make it worthwhile.

Why Visit the White Thai?

For me, mr.hotsia, seeing and experiencing the life of the White Thai in Vietnam is a rare experience. It’s not just about culture or language but about understanding a different way of life that is deeply connected.

This place is perfect for travelers who enjoy slow, deep travel and want to truly learn about local culture. Most importantly, the community’s friendship impressed me—they warmly welcome respectful tourists who genuinely want to learn about their lives.
