Most visitors to Halong usually buy tours from Hanoi. These are either day trips returning in the evening or two-day one-night tours. Prices vary depending on the boat and meals provided. When buying tours, check carefully about accommodation and meals. Buying tours is the most popular choice for visitors to Halong. To fully understand which option is best and most worthwhile, I chose to stay on Cat Ba Island.
I took a regular bus from Hanoi bus station to Halong, stayed one night there, then in the morning took a taxi to the ferry pier to catch a boat to Cat Ba. After disembarking the ferry, I took another bus to Cat Ba town. I traveled on a long holiday, Vietnam's National Day. All costs for transport, boat, and accommodation increased because more Vietnamese people were traveling. For example, bus fare rose from 15 baht to 120 baht.
Accommodation on Cat Ba on non-holidays costs about 10 USD, but prices rise on holidays. Therefore, if you plan to visit and stay on Cat Ba Island, buy bus tickets at box sale offices in Hanoi city for better prices and savings. The bus makes several stops until it reaches Cat Ba. Leaving Hanoi in the morning, you arrive in Cat Ba by afternoon. Accommodation on Cat Ba is mostly along the beach because the island has only a small flat area in front; beyond that are high limestone hills.
Most accommodations are lined up on the beach, costing about 10-15 USD per night. You can find available rooms easily; even on Vietnam's National Day, the busiest day, there were enough rooms. Most restaurants on Cat Ba serve seafood for dinner, which is excellent, especially fresh shellfish, but prices are not cheap and are much higher than in Thailand.
For breakfast and lunch, there are several Vietnamese street vendors along the beach road with reasonable prices, though not as cheap as in Hue or Hoi An. Mr.Hotsia recommends seafood restaurants here. Activities to do on Cat Ba include buying tours to visit Halong Bay, enjoying delicious seafood, strolling the fresh market, and waking early to drink Vietnamese coffee while walking around, which is also enjoyable. Cat Ba's bay is a beautiful semicircle; just looking out the hotel window offers a stunning view with cool breezes from Halong creating a perfect atmosphere.
At night, locals enjoy riding small three-wheeled bikes along the beach road, walking around, adding vibrant colors to the beach area. Cat Ba also has many massage shops along the beach where you can request massages as you prefer. Some massages may include additional services; if you want a standard massage, clearly inform the staff to avoid any issues. Mr.Hotsia May 2011.
