ชาวไทแดง เป็นพวกเดียวกับชาวไทดำ คือไทเดิมนั้นเอง ผิดกันแต่ประเพณีการแต่งกาย คือชาวไทแดงทั่วไปแต่งกายด้วยเสื้อผ้าสีน้ำเงินแก่ (สีน้ำเงินเป็นสีประจำชาติของไทมาแต่อดีต การแต่งกายด้วยสีน้ำเงินแก่ ทำให้ทราบทันทีว่าเป็นคนไท เพราะจีนตามปกติแต่งดำ ญวนแต่งน้ำตาล) ไทแดงชอบมีเครื่องประดับเสื่อผ้า เป็นลูกไม้หรือเป็นลวดลายสีแดง จึงถูกเรียกว่าไทแดง
