Backpacking Southern Laos Cambodia 20: Cambodian Pyramid, Singapore Fried Noodles in Siem Reap

When it comes to traveling to Cambodia, especially Siem Reap province, I, mr.hotsia, must honestly say this place is a uniquely charming destination, rich in history, lifestyle, and cuisine blending Khmer culture with influences from neighbors like Thailand and Singapore.

Starting from crossing the Poipet border gate as I described inTraveling from Rong Kluea Poipet to Siem Reapwhich is very easy and convenient for Thais, taking about 4 hours from Bangkok to Rong Kluea Market, then crossing into Cambodia via Poipet border. After that, take a taxi or shared minibus to Siem Reap, which is only about 6 kilometers away.

Angkor Wat, the Pyramid of Southeast Asia

From my real experience, I, mr.hotsia, found Angkor Wat is not just an ordinary tourist spot but one of the world's wonders within easy reach. It's like the Egyptian pyramids but much more accessible since you just cross the border from Thailand to Siem Reap. I recommend visiting independently to truly feel the atmosphere and details of the Khmer pyramid. You can walk around or rent a bicycle. Entrance tickets come in various options: 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week, depending on your available time.

While exploring the pyramid, I noticed incredibly detailed stone carvings telling Cambodia's history clearly. For those interested in art and history, Angkor Wat is a must-visit destination.Read more about Angkor Wat

Singapore Fried Noodles, an Original Dish in Siem Reap

After enjoying the pyramid and ancient art, one of my favorite things is trying local food here. Interestingly, “Singapore Fried Noodles” is not only found in Singapore but also in Siem Reap, where there are excellent restaurants serving rich and flavorful versions made by authentic Khmer cooks. Yellow noodles stir-fried with curry paste and spices simmered to perfection, seasoned with sauces and side dishes hard to find in Thailand. I tried it and felt this dish represents a fascinating cultural fusion.

If you come to Siem Reap, don't forget to try Singapore Fried Noodles at markets or city restaurants. Some places I tried have unique flavors you won't find elsewhere. Food here is affordable and boldly flavored in true Khmer style.

Accommodation in Central Siem Reap with Riverside Atmosphere

For staying in Siem Reap, I, mr.hotsia, usually chooseShadow Angkor guest houseThis place is peaceful, located by a canal flowing from Tonle Sap Lake, offering beautiful views of the river and a calm atmosphere unlike other busy areas. Rooms start at just 8 USD with professional service and great convenience. The hotel has its own restaurant and is close to Siem Reap market. A tuk-tuk ride costs only 1-2 USD, or you can stroll around leisurely.

If you want cheaper accommodation, I recommendReaksmey Chanreas Hotelwhich is next to the Capital Bus Station, convenient for travel, with air-conditioned rooms and WIFI for only 10 USD. It's suitable for those who want comfort at a low price. I plan to try staying here next time.

Lifestyle and Nightlife Fun in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is not only great during the day; its nightlife is equally charming. The Psar Chaa area is a safe zone for tourists to walk around, with bars, restaurants, and snooker halls open late. But to experience the real Khmer lifestyle, you should visit areas where locals hang out.

There is a public park with a carousel, playground, and popular local beer shops. In the evening, people move to the Beer Gardens street filled with restaurants and traditional music. Listening there feels like truly experiencing local life. I, mr.hotsia, recommend using tuk-tuks arranged by your accommodation for cheap and safe transport so you can enjoy the night worry-free.Read more about nightlife in Siem Reap
