Traveling from Poipet Border to Siem Reap with a real experience by mr.hotsia

Early morning at Rong Kluea Market, I, mr.hotsia, arrived before 8 AM. The atmosphere was still lively, filled with people coming to buy and sell various goods. At this moment, I decided to cross over to Cambodia at the Poipet border immediately, which is the gateway to a small but colorful and interesting town known well by Thai people as Poipet.

After completing immigration procedures, I encountered a system I had heard about many times: brokers who try to contact travelers to offer transfer services to the Siem Reap bus station. This is unavoidable for me, mr.hotsia, as it is part of the travel method here. The broker offered a free motorcycle ride to the bus station, but a customary tip was expected. I gave 15 baht, which seemed a bit disappointing to him, but I didn’t mind because I knew I was traveling on a limited budget.

For traveling from Poipet to Siem Reap, the popular option I chose wasshare taxior shared taxi. The vehicles used are mostly Toyota Camrys, a popular model here. The seating is quite tight: two seats in front beside the driver and up to four passengers in the back, making a full load of six people. I experienced this myself. Some might find the seating cramped, but for me, it was a cost-effective and much faster way to travel than the bus.

The broker quoted 300 baht, which I agreed to immediately because I knew the local cost of living well. Sometimes, there is negotiation to get a single front seat beside the driver for 600 baht. I told them I could squeeze in because of my limited budget, and they agreed. There was also an option to pay extra for immediate departure, which I declined as I wasn’t in a hurry and wanted to save money.

The distance from Poipet to Siem Reap is less than 200 kilometers, but the trip took nearly 2 hours because the vehicle didn’t travel very fast and stopped for about half an hour for lunch, which is a customary break for all vehicles. This slowed the journey a bit, but for me, it was a good time to enjoy the roadside scenery and rest before reaching the destination.

Upon arriving in Siem Reap, the drop-off point I recommend remembering well is “Prasat Chaa,” an old market and convenient accommodation area with many restaurants and shops around. This makes it easier to find lodging without pressure from tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi drivers. Here, I usually stay atShadow Angkor guest housewhich I trust for its professional service, affordable prices, and pleasant atmosphere by the canal. If interested, you can follow this link for more details.

For those looking for alternative accommodations, I recommendReaksmey Chanreas Hotelwhere I have stayed and found good value. It is cheaper but offers standard facilities including cool air conditioning and strong Wi-Fi, suitable for travelers wanting to save money without compromising quality.

Other travel options and a few tips from mr.hotsia

Besides the share taxi I regularly use, there are two other options: hiring a private taxi alone or taking the public bus, which costs around 200 baht. I haven’t tried these two methods myself because the share taxi best meets my needs for speed and price.

Additionally, in August 2012, I received information about a free government shuttle bus in Cambodia that picks up passengers right at the immigration checkpoint to take them to one of two international tourist bus stations in Siem Reap on alternating days. The farther station is larger and offers standard bus ticket prices without bargaining or crowding with locals. This is an interesting option for tourists seeking convenience and safety.

Touring Siem Reap and extending the experience

Siem Reap is not only convenient for travel but also serves as the gateway toAngkor Watone of the seven wonders of the world that many Thai people dream of seeing in person. Angkor Wat is only 6 kilometers from Siem Reap city center. Visiting is easy by renting a bicycle or hiring a tuk-tuk for a day trip.

If you enjoy nightlife, Siem Reap has two main areas of interest. The first is the Prasat Chaa area, which has bars, restaurants, and pubs for tourists and is safe to walk around without relying on tuk-tuks. The other area is popular with locals and offers a more traditional atmosphere and activities reflecting local life. To experience the authentic lifestyle of Siem Reap people, try taking a tuk-tuk from your accommodation to this area. You will be impressed just as much as traveling on your own.Read more about nightlife in Siem Reap

Negotiating with brokers or drivers is normal; be prepared and patient to handle this environment.
