Backpacking Southern Laos to Cambodia 21: Forest in the Middle of the Lake, Tonle Sap, Siem Reap, Cambodia
When it comes to a journey blending nature, mangrove forests, and ancient culture, I, mr.hotsia, would like to tell the story of backpacking from Southern Laos to Cambodia on an extraordinary route. This is an exploration of the “forest in the middle of the lake” area at Tonle Sap before arriving in Siem Reap, a historic land full of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the simple, warm lifestyle of the Cambodian people.
Starting the Journey from Southern Laos to Cambodia
This trip started from Southern Laos, rich in natural beauty, before crossing the border into Cambodia at the Poipet checkpoint opposite Rong Kluea Market, Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo Province. This is the main gateway for travelers wanting to conveniently and quickly experience the beauty of Cambodia, as I have previously described inTraveling from Rong Kluea Poipet to Siem ReapThe bus ride from Bangkok to Rong Kluea Market takes about 4 hours. There are many bus schedules to choose from according to your convenience.
Tonle Sap: The “Forest in the Middle of the Lake” You Must Not Miss
After passing the Poipet checkpoint, I chose to continue to Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in the region. Tonle Sap is not just an ordinary lake but a “forest in the middle of the lake” with waterways and mangrove forests intertwined. This allows you to see the lifestyle of fishermen and riverside communities who still strongly preserve ancient culture. I, mr.hotsia, took a boat to explore the lifestyle here myself, feeling the cool breeze and the scent of freshwater mixed with the smell of mangrove trees. It’s an experience I can honestly say “you won’t find anywhere else.”
Siem Reap: City of History and Culture
From Tonle Sap, I traveled on to Siem Reap, a city that travelers worldwide must visit. Besides Angkor Wat, a world-famous destination, Siem Reap also offers a charming and warm small-town atmosphere. I, mr.hotsia, often stay atShadow Angkor guest housea small guesthouse by the Mae Nam canal that flows from Tonle Sap into the city. Here, I feel like I have a second home because the staff are friendly and professional. There is a restaurant next door that I often visit, and importantly, the accommodation starts at only 8 USD.
For those wanting to try affordable and good accommodation, I recommendReaksmey Chanreas Hotelwhich is close to the bus station and the Capital bus queue, making travel very convenient. The rooms are clean, air-conditioned, and reasonably priced. I have stayed here myself and was impressed by the value.
Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Self-Guided Touring
Of course, coming to Siem Reap without visiting Angkor Wat is like not coming at all. I recommend buying a 3-day pass to fully experience every corner of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and other surrounding temples. Getting to Angkor Wat is easy; you can hire a tuk-tuk from the city for a friendly round trip price or rent a bicycle to explore around, which is also fun.Angkor WatOne of the 7 Wonders of the World, located so close to Thailand, yet its grandeur and atmosphere rival anywhere else in the world.
Lifestyle, Markets, and Street Food
In Siem Reap city, the morning and night markets are places I, mr.hotsia, love to stroll through. Seeing locals selling fresh produce, seafood from Tonle Sap, local vegetables, spices, and local dishes like “Amok” — fish in a spicy coconut milk bowl — is a joy for travelers wanting to try something new and taste the authentic flavors of Cambodia.
The markets in Siem Reap city also have small coffee shops serving traditional Cambodian coffee with an inviting aroma. I often stop to relax and watch people pass by — it’s the most natural and relaxing moment.
Nightlife in Siem Reap
When the sun sets, Siem Reap transforms into a lively city. There are two main zones tourists should not miss: the Psar Chaa area with bars and pubs open late, and another zone about 4-5 kilometers away, popular with locals. I, mr.hotsia, recommend hiring a tuk-tuk from your accommodation to visit this area to truly experience local life, listen to traditional music, and enjoy unique local snacks.
To add flavor to your night, I often watch the famous Apsara dance performances here. Tickets can be booked through hotels or guesthouses, such asROSANA Broadway apsara dance showwhich I have attended and was very impressed by both the performance and the atmosphere.
Summary of Backpacking from Southern Laos to Cambodia
This journey of mine, mr.hotsia, was like an adventure encountering rich nature, the lifestyle along Tonle Sap, and the charm of Siem Reap city with its ancient sites, food, and community life. The trip is not difficult and can be comfortably planned on your own.
