Cambodian Beer: Angkor Beer & Cambodia Beer, a taste from the heart of Siem Reap by Mr.Hotsia
When I, Mr.Hotsia, traveled toSiem ReapCambodia, a place full of the charm of Angkor Wat and ancient culture. One thing I did not miss was trying the “national beer” of the Khmer calledAngkor Beeror what the locals call “Angkor Beer” itself.
Many may wonder what makes this beer special? Angkor Beer is inspired by “Angkor,” or Angkor Wat, which appears on the Cambodian national flag. It is a symbol of national pride, similar to Singha beer in Thailand or Beerlao in Laos.
A taste to try from Mr.Hotsia’s experience
Tasting Angkor Beer for me is unlike drinking typical beers in this region. I compare this beer to Thailand’s Leo or Myanmar’s Leo, and the slightly sweet Beerlao.
Angkor Beer has a stronger and more intense flavor. It is not as smooth as Beerlao, which has a light sweetness. Drinking Angkor Beer requires it to be very cold and served in small bottles to get the best taste. I tried it both not chilled and very cold, and the difference was clear. It made me feel this beer suits those who like a strong and refreshing taste after experiencing the hot weather of Siem Reap.
Besides bottled beer, I also triedAngkor draft beer(spelled slightly differently in English as “Anchor”) sold by the glass for about 15 Thai baht. The taste impressed me a lot—refreshing and noticeably stronger than bottled beer. I consider it one of the best draft beers in Siem Reap.
The atmosphere of drinking beer in Siem Reap
In the evening after exploringAngkor Wator walking around old Siem Reap town, sitting and drinking beer atBeer Gardenor the beer garden in downtown Siem Reap is an activity I really enjoy. The atmosphere is lively with tourists and locals, with soft traditional music playing and dim lighting creating a truly relaxing feeling.
This area usually has rows of restaurants selling a variety of snacks, from simple fried foods to authentic Khmer dishes like sun-dried fish and fresh vegetables easily found in local markets. I like ordering a large glass of Angkor draft beer and enjoying the nighttime atmosphere, which is different from Siem Reap’s nightlife district that focuses more on bars and pubs.Siem Reap nightlifewhich focuses more on bars and pubs
Beer and convenient travel
I started my journey from Thailand, crossing the Poipet border opposite Rong Kluea Market viaa convenient routewhich is a main connection point for tourists before heading to Siem Reap. The travel was easy and hassle-free.
Upon arriving in Siem Reap, I usually stay atShadow Angkor Guest HouseHere, the accommodation is affordable, service is good, and it is located by a canal with a beautiful view, helping me relax after a day of travel. There is also a restaurant next to the guesthouse, with bicycle and tuk-tuk rentals for convenient travel to various places, including nightlife spots.
Beer in Cambodia: More than flavor, it’s culture
Angkor Beer and Cambodia Beer are not just drinks but symbols reflecting the culture and pride of the Cambodian people. I feel the producers’ intention to let the world experience the taste and identity of Cambodia in every sip.
Imagine after a tiring day exploring the grand temples of Angkor Wat or walking the markets in the old town, sitting down with a cold draft beer with new friends met along the way or friendly locals is a feeling that completes the journey perfectly.
Additional recommendations for travelers
If anyone wants to fully enjoy local beer tasting, I recommend visiting markets and bars in downtown Siem Reap or stopping by the beer garden I visited. It’s always crowded with a great atmosphere.
For budget but good accommodation options, there isReaksmey Chanreas Hotelwhich is near the bus station and offers excellent service, suitable for travelers planning multiple days.
For those interested in fully exploringAngkor Watbicycle rentals or private tuk-tuks from the guesthouse are very convenient. Don’t forget to watch the famous Apsara dance performance in Siem Reap as well.Apsara Dance Performancewill enrich your Cambodian cultural experience impressively.
Summary of impressions from Mr.Hotsia
Angkor Beer and Cambodia Beer are drinks that come with stories and the true identity of Cambodia. I, Mr.Hotsia, believe anyone visiting Siem Reap who does not try these beers misses an important chance to experience a part of local culture through these simple yet profound drinks.
Don’t forget to chill it well, prepare a cold glass, and drink slowly to enjoy a taste different from what you’re used to. I guarantee this will be a great memory you’ll carry home for a long time.
