Prey Veng Food - Local cuisine of Prey Veng Province, Cambodia
For me, mr.hotsia, tasting local food is an essential part of traveling, especially when visiting Prey Veng, a small province in northern Cambodia. It is not as bustling as big cities but has its own unique charm in lifestyle and cuisine that clearly differs from other places.
I traveled to Prey Veng from Svay Rieng Province by van, getting off at Neak Leung, a busy riverside town on the Mekong River with many fresh markets and local restaurants. Then I rented a motorbike to continue about 30 kilometers to Prey Veng town. This journey allowed me to fully see the lifestyle on both sides of the Mekong River.Traveling to Prey Veng ProvinceIt is an experience I highly recommend for those who like to go off the main tourist routes.
Restaurants in Prey Veng Town
Upon arriving in Prey Veng town, I found that restaurants are quite scarce. Most are hotel restaurants offering a mix of Cambodian and Western dishes. Menus are simple, focusing on easy dishes made from local ingredients such as Mekong River fish, local vegetables, and home-raised pork or chicken.
The first restaurant I was impressed with and want to recommend isthe restaurant at Mittapheap Hotelwhere I stayed. The atmosphere was friendly, filled with lively conversations between the owner and staff. Most customers were local villagers. I ordered a simple dish of crispy fried river fish topped with a sweet and sour dipping sauce and hot steamed rice. It made me feel like I was eating the authentic home-style food that people in Prey Veng really enjoy.
Street Food and Local Eateries
Another spot not to miss is the grilled pork skewers and fresh French bread near Navy Hotel, close to Ta Klay Lake Market. This small shop sells freshly baked French-style buns served with seasoned shredded green papaya and local sausages with a unique flavor and aroma. Although the sausages looked a bit dark, the taste was excellent. The grilled pork skewers were fragrant with rustic spices I had never tried before.
I usually order food where locals eat because it helps me understand the lifestyle of Prey Veng people. The food here is not flashy but full of simplicity and freshness of ingredients. I once tried to find late-night food near Mittapheap Hotel but rain stopped me from tasting the night menu. Atmosphere and Lifestyle at Prey Veng Market
The market in Prey Veng town is not very large but lively in the mornings and evenings. Locals sell fresh produce like vegetables, fruits, river fish, and various meats, including freshly made traditional sweets. I walked through the market in the morning and saw that Prey Veng people live simply. Horse carts and ox carts share the roads with cars, giving the town a peaceful and charming feel.
If you want to truly experience the lifestyle, I recommend walking around small eateries selling made-to-order dishes or traditional sweets at the market. Some vendors may not speak English well, but with gestures and smiles, you will surely take home a memorable atmosphere and taste.
Where to Stay and Returning Travel
Regarding accommodation, I recommend staying at Mittapheap Hotel because it offers affordable rooms and is close to the bus station heading to Phnom Penh, making onward travel convenient. The hotel provides WIFI, hot water, and air conditioning, which help you relax after a long day of traveling.Guesthouses and Hotels in Prey Veng ProvinceI have written a detailed review. For returning from Prey Veng to Phnom Penh, the bus waits right in front of Mittapheap Hotel, making it convenient without needing to travel far to catch a bus elsewhere.
Summary
Prey Veng Province may not be a tourist city with many or luxurious restaurants like big cities, but for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing and tasting local food here is a unique and memorable experience. The simple food with local flavors, the unhurried lifestyle of the people, and the peaceful atmosphere make Prey Veng another destination worth visiting.
