Haircut with Traditional Manual Clippers in Takaew, Cambodia
I, mr.hotsia, traveled to Takaew, a small town full of traditional local lifestyles and a bustling morning market. Today, I want to share a special experience of trying a haircut with traditional manual clippers, a rare tool still preserved in this community.
While strolling through Takaew's morning market, I found a small barbershop nearby. This shop doesn't use ordinary electric clippers like most places but uses traditional manual clippers that require pinching and snipping each hair strand, just like my father used to cut my hair in elementary school. I remember the pain when pulling hair but also the fun. So today, I decided to go back in time and experience it again.
The barbershop here is very simple, with only an old wooden chair and natural light from the window. The traditional manual clippers the barber used looked old but still very sharp. The barber was a kind man, speaking mostly Khmer with a little Thai. We communicated half and half using my own technique, assuming we understood each other to keep the conversation flowing despite differences in accent and vocabulary.
I asked the barber for a light trim. These traditional manual clippers require high skill because poor control can pull hair or cause pain. But the barber here did very well, making me feel like I was back in my childhood at home. After the haircut, he also shaved my mustache and beard. It was a fun and heartwarming moment, truly experiencing the local way of life.
Takaew Morning Market Atmosphere and Local Lifestyle
Speaking of Takaew, the morning market is the heart of this town. I have written about the morning market in an article.Takaew Morning MarketHere you can find fresh food, vegetables, fruits, and unique items like the piglet market where small piglets are sold naturally in baskets. I like this place because it still preserves traditional lifestyles and shows close relationships between sellers and buyers.
While walking in the market, you will smell the aroma of curry rice sold at many stalls. This area has several recommended breakfast spots that I enjoy visiting, as mentioned in the article.Recommended Breakfast RestaurantsI also didn’t miss trying authentic Khmer curry rice, which tastes as rich and smooth as at home.
Takaew Town Atmosphere and Accommodation
Takaew is a small town easy to explore on foot. I stayed atHouy Meyly Guest Housewhich is a new guesthouse with free WIFI and comfortable rooms. Staying here allowed me to experience local life closely because it’s not far from the market and the traditional barbershop where I got my haircut.
Another interesting thing in town is the horse-drawn carts used to carry heavy loads like bricks and sand for construction shops, unlike other places where horse carts are only for tourists. You can read more about horse carts in Takaew atHorse Carts in Takaew Province
