Hotels and Accommodation in Takaew Province: A Real Experience with mr.hotsia
When talking about Takaew Province in Cambodia, many might think of a small town that still firmly preserves the simplicity and traditional Khmer way of life. I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to visit here and experienced firsthand the challenge of finding accommodation. Takaew is a town you can walk around quickly, and there are no motorcycle taxis like in bigger cities, so I had to explore on foot to find a place to stay.
While walking around the town, especially behind the Takaew market, I found three interesting guesthouses. The standout one I chose to stay at wasHouy Meyly Guest HouseA brand-new guesthouse with full amenities, especially free and fast WIFI, which is rare in such a small town.
The hotel’s appearance is beautiful and clean, unlike typical guesthouses in rural Cambodia. Importantly, it has air conditioning, locally calledMachenta Jiewhich literally means “cooling machine.” “Machenta” comes from the word for machine, and “Ta Jie” means cold or cool. Since Takaew is hot year-round, having air conditioning is essential.
Room rates here are about 10-12 USD, which is reasonable for the amenities and location. I want to emphasize that in Cambodia, air conditioning usually costs a little extra, but at Houy Meyly Guest House, free WIFI is included with no additional charge, unlike many hotels in Thailand. This is something I, mr.hotsia, hope to see more of in the future because charging extra for WIFI is something I do not support.
Experience Small Town Life and Local Markets
After resting, I explored the nearby Takaew market, which is the heart of the town. It offers fresh food, dried goods, and many interesting snacks. The food stalls next to the market serve a unique Takaew-style khanom jeen (fermented rice noodles) made with thinly sliced lotus stems and a sweet sauce unlike anywhere else. I have shared about Takaew’s local food in the articleTakaew Province Local Foodwhich I recommend trying if you have the chance to visit.
The morning market here is also special for its piglet section, where piglets are sold in small baskets directly by locals without middlemen. I documented this experience in the articleTakaew Morning MarketandTakaew Piglet Market TAKAEW market cambodiawhich add to the charm of this small town.
Walk Around the Town and Experience the Lifestyle Up Close
In Takaew, I also saw horse carts heavily used for transporting construction materials, unlike other places where horse carts are mainly for tourists. Here, they carry bricks, stones, soil, and sand in front of building supply shops, reflecting the simple yet strong lifestyle of the locals. This small detail is something I, mr.hotsia, really liked during my city walk (read about horse carts in Takaew atHorse Carts in Takaew Province)
For those who love market atmospheres and want to truly experience local life, don’t miss walking around the morning market and trying the sweet and delicate khnom khmer swan egg snack, as well as the delicious local breakfast of rice with curry. I have recommended breakfast spots in the articleRecommended Breakfast Restaurantsand if you want to see the full atmosphere of rice with curry in Takaew, you can watch the videolocal food in TAKAEW Khao Rad Gaeng Takaewhere.
Impressions and Recommendations from mr.hotsia
For those planning to visit Takaew, I encourage you to prepare your heart to truly experience the town’s simplicity. There are no shuttle services or motorcycle taxis like in big tourist cities, and accommodations are not luxurious like five-star hotels. But what you gain is the warmth of the locals and friendly service you won’t find in big cities.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying at Houy Meyly Guest House because besides clean rooms and cool air conditioning, you get free internet, which is essential for travelers needing to stay connected. The location is also convenient for walking to markets and food spots, allowing you to fully experience local life and cuisine.
If you enjoy adventure by foot, exploring small towns, and want to deeply understand Khmer lifestyle, this is a choice you should not overlook. Don’t forget to try local food at the morning market.TAKAEW morning market Takaew Province Morning MarketAlso, experience local life up close, such as getting a haircut with an old-fashioned battery clipper, which I have described in the articleHaircut with Old Battery ClipperThis will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time to a lost past.
Finally, I, mr.hotsia, hope everyone visiting Takaew will open their hearts to new experiences and enjoy traveling in this charming small town.
