Bus from Stung Treng to Pakse, Laos: A cross-border route that mr.hotsia doesn't want you to miss

If you are in Stung Treng Province, Cambodia, and want to continue your journey to Laos, especially Pakse city in Champasak Province, this route is one of the experiences I, mr.hotsia, have tried and must share. This route is not just an ordinary border crossing but a chance to experience life along the Mekong River, the simplicity of the locals, and the rapidly developing convenience of this region.

Starting in Stung Treng town, a small riverside town with a simple charm and impressive daily life. If you have read my articleTraveling in Stung Treng Provinceyou will understand that this is the southern gateway to Laos that is rapidly growing. There is a Mekong River bridge and roads being improved to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.

Buy bus tickets at Riverside Guesthouse, the starting point of the journey

For travel from Stung Treng to Pakse or Nakasan town, the most convenient starting point is to buy bus tickets at Riverside Guesthouse, located next to the riverside gas station in Stung Treng town. There are about two departures daily, morning and afternoon. Although the buses may not depart exactly on time, the service is definitely available.

I, mr.hotsia, once traveled from Stung Treng to Nakasan to cross over to Don Det, also known as Li Phi. I bought a single ticket from the start in Stung Treng. The bus took us across the border to the Laos side, then we switched to a Laos bus to get off at Don Det. After that, use the ticket given to present to the bus queue officer to receive a ferry ticket from Nakasan to Don Det. This is another memorable travel experience because you get to see the Mekong riverside lifestyle up close.

Distance and travel time suitable for travelers

The total distance from Stung Treng to Don Det is less than 60 kilometers, taking about 2 hours. The ticket price is around 10 US dollars, which is very worthwhile for a cross-country route full of stories and beautiful scenery.

For those who want to continue directly to Pakse, you can stay on the same bus. The bus will take you from Nakasan to Pakse, which is about 60-70 kilometers away and takes only about 1 hour. The Champasak Laos and Stung Treng Cambodia border checkpoint is an international checkpoint currently being expanded to accommodate the growing number of tourists in the future.

Comfort of the route and future changes

The roads on this route are continuously being developed. The Mekong River bridge at Stung Treng makes travel much more convenient compared to the past. I, mr.hotsia, who traveled here before, clearly felt this change and believe that in the future this route will become one of the most popular cross-border tourist routes.

Experience the lifestyle and atmosphere of Stung Treng before departure

If you have some time before departure, I recommend taking a walk around Stung Treng town. From early morning to evening, you will experience the local lifestyle of fishermen at dawn by the Mekong River, the atmosphere of morning and evening markets with a variety of local foods, including famous breakfast spots in town such as the hot fried chicken rice shop where you can watch people passing by. For an authentic local feeling, try visitingStung Treng breakfast restaurantsor take a stroll through theStung Treng Marketwhich is colorful and full of interesting items to enjoy watching.

Evening at the park and along the Mekong River

After a tiring day of travel, try spending a relaxing evening at the central town park. Here you will find street vendors selling fried meatballs, grilled pork, and local snacks, along with the atmosphere of locals bringing their children to play. You will see the unfiltered lifestyle of Stung Treng people before taking a walk along the Mekong River to enjoy the cool breeze, a perfect way to end the day.Walking and dining in Stung Trengis an activity I, mr.hotsia, enjoy every time I visit here.

Summary of the journey from Stung Treng to Pakse

When talking about the bus route from Stung Treng to Pakse, I, mr.hotsia, recommend it as a worthwhile and interesting route. It is not just a border crossing to a neighboring country but also an opportunity to experience the lifestyle of people along the Mekong River, witness the rapid development of the region, and relax in the peaceful and friendly atmosphere of a small town like Stung Treng.
