Enjoy an evening food stroll in Stung Treng, a small riverside town along the Mekong River in Cambodia

For travelers who love to truly absorb the lifestyle of a quiet small town, Stung Treng in Stung Treng Province, Cambodia, is a destination I, mr.hotsia, strongly recommend. This town is located at the northernmost part of Cambodia, bordering Champasak Province of Laos. It is an important border town for trade between the two countries and is rapidly developing.Stung Treng ProvinceIt is ideal for those who want to experience local life slowly and unhurriedly.

Central City Park, a lively evening gathering spot

Before dusk falls, locals in Stung Treng bring their children to play energetically at the central city park. Children run around with laughter echoing, while some adults exercise at a relaxed pace. I strolled around enjoying the atmosphere accompanied by the aroma of food vendors setting up along the park. There were carts selling fried meatballs, grilled pork, and “Poo Sua,” a local dish easily found along the small streets of this town.

Eating street food by the park alongside the locals here was an experience I, mr.hotsia, deeply appreciated because it showed the simplicity and happiness from small daily activities of Stung Treng people. It’s unlike busy markets or tourist-packed walking streets; this is real life with a slow and friendly pace.

Digestive walk along the Mekong River with refreshing breeze

After enjoying snacks at the park, I chose to walk along the peaceful Mekong River flowing through the town. The Mekong in Stung Treng has its own charm, with cool breezes and traces of fishing boats and locals still living traditionally visible not far from the shore. Walking by the river helped me relax and see another side of the town that few tourists reach.

For those wanting to add color to their morning, I recommend waking up early to enjoy the atmosphereFish Bridge along the Mekong RiverHere you can see locals fishing and living closely with the river. The morning atmosphere is fresh and lively, a scene I, mr.hotsia, found equally impressive.

Youth riding motorcycles enjoying the cool breeze in the small town

While walking, I noticed groups of Stung Treng youths riding motorcycles in small groups of two or three, circling around and chatting happily. They don’t have many hangout spots or bars because the town is quite small and retains much simplicity, unlike big cities with many entertainment venues.

This is another reason I chose to have dinner at Riverside Guesthouse, located by the Mekong River. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the special highlight is the availability of Lao Beer White, priced around 80 baht per bottle, served ice-cold. I, mr.hotsia, enjoyed sipping beer while watching the river view and listening to the quieting sounds of the small town at night. It was a very memorable moment.

Dinner and a small market full of discoveries

For those wanting to try authentic local food fully, Stung Treng has a small market to stroll through and buy fresh food, located not far from the park. I have walked there myself and found unusual foods not seen elsewhere, especially dishes locals sell in the evening, which are interesting and offer genuine Cambodian flavors.

For breakfast, I have recommendedStung Treng Breakfast Restaurantwhich serves hot fried chicken rice and fresh coffee, where you can watch people riding motorcycles pass by, adding atmosphere to a great start to the day.

Travel and convenience in the border town

Speaking of travel, Stung Treng is a border town connected to Laos through a large and modern permanent checkpoint. There are convenient buses from here to Pakse, Laos. I bought tickets at Riverside Guesthouse, the main ticket point in town, which offers excellent and convenient service. For those planning to continue traveling from here, I recommend allowing time to stroll around the town before departure to fully experience the real lifestyle of Stung Treng people.

Summary of the evening food stroll in Stung Treng

Stung Treng is not a major tourist city with bright lights or luxurious attractions, but it is a small riverside town with its own charm. With a simple lifestyle and delicious local food, I, mr.hotsia, consider it one of the must-visit destinations for adventurous travelers who want to experience the true life of local people.

If anyone is interested in following my footsteps, start at the central city park in the evening, stroll along the Mekong River, sip cold beer at Riverside Guesthouse, and don’t forget to wake up early to enjoy the atmosphere atFish Bridge along the Mekong Riverto complete your trip with unique memories in Cambodia.
