Phnom Sampeay Temple, a place of memories and scenic views in Battambang

When talking about Battambang, a Cambodian border province next to Chanthaburi, a city where mr.hotsia had the chance to travel and experience the local way of life deeply. One place I want to share isPhnom Sampeay Templeor Phnom Samprou, which is not just an ordinary tourist spot but full of heartbreaking historical stories and breathtaking atmosphere.

Phnom Sampeay Temple is located on a hilltop in Battambang city, not far from the town center. It is known as a place with deep caves that were once used as execution sites by the Khmer Rouge. In the past, tens of thousands of people died here, thrown into those deep cave shafts. These events make this place a painful memorial for the Cambodian people.

mr.hotsia personally visited this place and must say the atmosphere was very different from what I expected. Besides the lingering sadness, the view from the hilltop was so beautiful that I couldn’t take my eyes off it. This place is both a memorial and a must-visit viewpoint when coming to Battambang.

Travel and Expenses

If you visit Battambang, mr.hotsia recommends using tuk-tuk services that can take you to Phnom Sampeay Temple and Banan Temple, another important tourist site in the area. The combined entrance fee for both places is about 2 USD. However, to go up to see the caves and the view on top, you need to pay an additional 4 USD for a motorcycle with a guide. The guide will also drive the motorcycle and some speak Thai, making communication much easier.

On the way up the hill, the guide will take you to see the caves that were once execution sites before bringing you to the viewpoint overlooking Battambang city. Afterwards, you will be taken to eat at the guide’s own restaurant. I tried it; the food wasn’t excellent but acceptable and very affordable, about 2 USD for a buffet with the guide and tuk-tuk driver. It’s a meal that offers both taste and support for the locals.

Stories and Feelings from mr.hotsia

My experience at Phnom Sampeay Temple was not just about climbing the hill to see the view or the execution caves but also about learning the life stories and history of the Cambodian people who endured great suffering. The silence and surrounding atmosphere made me feel respect and appreciation for the resilience of the people here.

If you are interested in history and want to see a different perspective of Battambang beyond the fresh markets or local food tasting that mr.hotsia has recommended in articles,Battambang Foodvisiting Phnom Sampeay Temple is an experience you should not miss.

Connecting with Battambang City

Battambang itself is a charming city with bustling fresh markets full of locals and unique culture, as well as food similar to Thai but with its own identity, such as the sweet fish rice porridge that mr.hotsia really likes. You can read stories and recommended restaurants inBattambang Food Articlethat I have written.

Moreover, traveling to Battambang is convenient, especially if you cross via Ban Phak Kad checkpoint in Chanthaburi province, the main route connecting Thailand and Cambodia. mr.hotsia has written aboutTraveling to Battambang (Pattambang)which will help you prepare and plan your trip more easily.

Accommodation and Transportation Recommendations in the City

For accommodation in Battambang, I recommend choosing clean and safe places such asLux Guesthousewhere I stayed. It is affordable and offers good service, suitable for travelers who want to explore the city and nearby places like Phnom Sampeay Temple.

Summary of Experience and Recommendations
