Sihanoukville Market: The Lifestyle and Charm of Cambodia's Coastal City
When talking about Sihanoukville, many people might think of beautiful beaches and the relaxing seaside atmosphere of Cambodia, but few get to experience the fresh market in this city. For me, mr.hotsia, Sihanoukville Market is one of the destinations full of stories and an interesting lifestyle that rivals even the sea.
Sihanoukville, formerly known as Kampong Som, is one of Cambodia's top resort cities. It is located by the clear sea of Cambodia with a peaceful atmosphere, distinctly different from Thai beaches like Pattaya. It is quiet here, and tourists are not as crowded as in other places. I traveled here through Ban Had Lek checkpoint in Trat Province, following the route I previously described in an article.Traveling from Trat to Sihanoukvillewhich is convenient and continuous all the way to the heart of Sihanoukville city
One morning, I woke up early to explore the city's fresh market, located in a medium-sized indoor market building. Here you will see a variety of fresh items, including local vegetables, fruits, and fresh seafood sold by Khmer vendors. I also walked through the adjacent dry market, which is open all day, selling everything from clothes and essentials to small items reflecting the simple life of the locals.
Sihanoukville Market is located next to a school, making the morning a very impressive time. When the children of Sihanoukville go to school accompanied by teachers waiting at the school gate, I saw children picking up trash along the roadside, reminiscent of my childhood memories when teachers asked us to clean in front of the classroom. This simple scene made me feel deeply connected to the lifestyle here.
After exploring the market thoroughly, I stopped to have a typical Sihanoukville breakfast: grilled pork rice. This dish is unforgettable. The grilled pork smells of charcoal and has a rich flavor, served with crispy fried duck egg, a recipe popular in southern Vietnam and southern Cambodia. Eating this breakfast while watching the market life made me feel like I truly experienced Sihanoukville beyond just a seaside city tourists usually see.
Another interesting aspect of Sihanoukville Market is the calmness and naturalness still present in this community. Thai tourists rarely come here. I talked with many locals who said that Thais still don't know much about Sihanoukville. This is a great opportunity for me to capture the atmosphere and HD videos to share so everyone can see the true charm of the market and life in this city.
If you are interested in experiencing this atmosphere, I recommend staying in downtown Sihanoukville in the night market zone. The hotel I stayed at is calledSihanouk Timeshare Hotellocated near the market and the second beach road. It is very convenient to walk to the market or the beach. Although the electricity often goes out, the rooms are comfortable and reasonably priced.
In the mornings in Sihanoukville, you will see vendors carrying trays on their heads selling goods both in the market and along the beach. This is a scene I have never seen anywhere else. This style of selling gives the city its unique color and character. Fresh fruits, seafood, and various snacks are arranged on trays carried skillfully by the vendors walking along the streets.
Speaking of food in Sihanoukville fresh market, I tried several popular local dishes. Besides the grilled pork rice mentioned earlier, there is also chicken rice porridge, a popular breakfast, and richly flavored stir-fried noodles at a night market restaurant near the market. I also tried grilled stingray bought from the market, which is a famous dish of Sihanoukville. You can read more about food and restaurants in this city in my article.Food and Restaurants in Sihanoukvillethat I have written about
For those who like to visit both the sea and fresh markets in the same city, Sihanoukville is a great choice. After finishing the market walk, you can reach the beach in just 10 minutes. The beaches include Ochheuteal, Serendipity, and Otres Beach, which offer a peaceful and clean atmosphere, perfect for relaxation or seaside massages. I have written stories about the beaches and massages here in an article.Beaches of SihanoukvilleandCambodian Beach Massage in Sihanoukvillewhich are very interesting for travelers seeking a complete experience.

For anyone wanting to fully experience Sihanoukville—its lifestyle, fresh market, local food, and beautiful beaches—I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend this place. It will make you fall in love with this small coastal city in Cambodia without realizing it. As always, I will return to share new stories and experiences.
