Hotels and Accommodations in Sihanoukville with Experiences from mr.hotsia
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will share my experience selecting and staying at accommodations in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, formerly known to many as "Kampong Som." This city is Cambodia’s top seaside resort destination. With beautiful seas, clear water, clean beaches, and affordable accommodations, Sihanoukville has become a destination for both international tourists and Cambodians themselves. Surprisingly, very few Thai tourists visit here. So, I want to share detailed accommodation information to help you prepare and choose the perfect stay when visiting this city.
Getting to Know Accommodation Zones in Sihanoukville
From my multiple trips, I divide the accommodation zones in Sihanoukville into two main areas.
Zone One: Sihanoukville Town
This zone is not directly on the beach but is located in the city center. It’s about a 10-minute walk from accommodations to the sea, or you can easily call a tuk-tuk if you don’t want to walk. It’s close to the fresh market and the night market, which offers many nighttime food options. You also get to experience the authentic lifestyle of Sihanoukville locals. I stayed atSihanoukville Timeshare Hotel(Sihanouk Timeshare Hotel) This hotel is located on the second street from the beach. The hotel is clean, with rates around 15 USD per night or approximately 450-500 THB. Paying in US dollars is cheaper than other currencies. This place is suitable for those who want comfortable stays close to markets and nighttime eateries.
Zone Two: Beachfront
This zone is ideal for those who want to wake up to a sea view every day. Most accommodations are located next to beachfront restaurants. The beachfront road in this zone is surrounded by guesthouses and small hotels, with prices starting from about 300 THB. Here, you will enjoy a full seaside atmosphere and many fresh seafood restaurants to choose from. Most foreign tourists prefer this zone for its tranquility and beautiful sea views.
Important Notes for Accommodations in Sihanoukville
From my personal experience, mr.hotsia, I must say that electricity in Sihanoukville often has issues. Power outages happen frequently during both day and night. All hotels have backup generators, but most only use them at night. If you stay during the day and the power goes out, you might have no electricity at all. For example, when I stayed during the day, there was no power for air conditioning or lights. Some small hotels may not even have air conditioning. Therefore, if you dislike inconvenience, I recommend staying at larger hotels with better electricity management to ensure a comfortable stay.
WiFi internet is available at almost every hotel, but it will not work during power outages.
Booking Accommodations in Advance is Important
Sihanoukville is a popular destination for Cambodians during long holidays. I have experienced no available accommodations during Songkran because all hotels were fully booked. If you plan to visit during long holidays or festivals, make sure to book your accommodation in advance for peace of mind and to avoid wasting time searching for hotels upon arrival.
Connecting Your Sihanoukville Travel Experience
If you are interested in traveling from Thailand to Sihanoukville, I have written detailed information aboutTraveling from Trat to Sihanoukvillewhere I took a bus from Bangkok to the Ban Hat Lek border checkpoint in Trat Province, then easily continued by car to Sihanoukville.
After securing your accommodation, I recommend taking a walk atSihanoukville Marketand tasting local dishes atlocal restaurantsthat offer authentic Southern Khmer flavors. Or you can enjoy the beautiful beach atmosphere atSihanoukville Beacheswhich is another charm that deeply impressed me.
Real Atmosphere from mr.hotsia
When I stayed in downtown Sihanoukville, I liked waking up early to walk to the nearby fresh market and order Khmer-style grilled pork rice for breakfast. It’s a delicious meal that also lets you experience the local lifestyle authentically. The market atmosphere is lively and friendly. I saw vendors carrying goods on their heads selling fruits and food along the beach, making the beach here lively unlike anywhere else I have been.
However, hotels in Sihanoukville usually do not offer luxurious services like those in major tourist cities in Thailand or Vietnam. What you get instead is the natural and simple seaside life that is rare to find nowadays.

Choosing accommodations affects your comfort, especially with frequent power outages. I, mr.hotsia, recommend booking in advance and choosing hotels either in the city center or beachfront according to your preference.
