Mr. Hotsia's New Haircut in Svay Rieng: A Unique Experience in the Cambodian Border Town
I, mr.hotsia, have stories to share from my latest trip to Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia. This small town lies on the route from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. I had long planned to get a very short skinhead haircut but hesitated because I knew the back of my head is flat, and cutting too short might not look good as expected.
But as time passed, I began to understand that travel and life don't have to depend on others' opinions. So I decided to get the very short haircut here in Svay Rieng. I chose to go to a women's hair salon not far from my hotel. The salon opens from 8:00 AM. Choosing a women's salon was not just for convenience but because I wanted to get both a haircut and a wash in one place, so I wouldn't have to walk around with an itchy scalp all day while taking photos.
The hairstyle I chose was carefully cut with scissors, taking about 30 minutes, including a very comfortable hair wash. The total cost for the haircut and wash was only about 100 baht. I felt this haircut was an impressive change and an experience I had never tried elsewhere.
Getting to Know Svay Rieng Province: A Charming Border Town
Svay Rieng Province is a small province located on the Cambodian border adjacent to Vietnam, with the Bavet checkpoint connecting the two countries. The town of Svay Rieng itself has a unique charm that I, mr.hotsia, really like because it still maintains its peacefulness and traditional culture completely.
If anyone is interested in travel routes, I have written detailed accounts of the journey from Pursat Province to Svay Rieng.Traveling to Svay Rieng ProvinceI took a boat across Tonle Sap Lake from Siem Reap to Pursat, then a bus to Phnom Penh, and another bus to Svay Rieng. Although it seems like a long route, I liked this method because it allowed me to see various lifestyles and nature in Cambodia.
In Svay Rieng town, there is a private lake where locals fish and sell their catch actively at the morning market. I have recorded the atmosphere of this morning market inSvay Rieng Morning Marketwhere you can see the warm and simple rural lifestyle. There are sticky rice desserts, rice noodles served in bamboo baskets lined with banana leaves, which add interesting colors.
Accommodation and Atmosphere in Svay Rieng Town
For accommodation in Svay Rieng, although there are no lakeside hotels as I expected, the town offers several guesthouses and hotels. I stayed at Tonlay Waiko Hotel, which has no Wi-Fi but clean rooms, cool air conditioning, and an atmosphere perfect for experiencing local life. There is also a restaurant and karaoke service at the hotel.
If you want a friendly atmosphere with owners who speak Thai, I recommend checking outHotels in Svay Rieng Provinceand other options available. I believe staying in this town will allow you to deeply learn and experience Khmer culture.
Food in Svay Rieng: Familiar Flavors with Local Charm
The food in Svay Rieng is very similar to ours, especially breakfast with many curry rice shops to choose from. I, mr.hotsia, like to have a heavy breakfast because other meals are harder to find familiar dishes. Here, the pork stew is delicious and not too sweet, with ginger pork stir-fry and bamboo shoot curry that are truly excellent. For dinner, they eat grilled fish rice porridge, which feels warm and homely.

Summary of the Haircut and Trip in Svay Rieng
Getting the very short haircut in Svay Rieng was another life experience I, mr.hotsia, am very proud of. It’s not just about the hairstyle but about opening my heart to accept and learn to live freely in this quiet small town.
Svay Rieng is not a famous tourist city but is suitable for those who want to experience the real lifestyle of Cambodian people. If anyone is interested in traveling and trying new experiences, I recommend giving it a try.Traveling in Svay Rieng Provincewhich I have shared before, or if you want a peaceful rest, try choosing a hotel in town.
Finally, this trip and haircut were like a true journey in life that requires courage to try and openness to new things. Svay Rieng taught me these lessons deeply, and I hope you will experience it yourself.
