Food and Cuisine of Svay Rieng People, a border town with flavors close to ours
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today I will share about the food and cuisine of Svay Rieng, a small province in Cambodia that I had the chance to visit. This province lies on the route from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City. For those planning to travel this route, I recommend stopping to try the local food here because the flavors and eating styles are surprisingly similar to ours.
I traveled to Svay Rieng by bus from Phnom Penh. The bus left at 3 PM and arrived near evening. I took a motorcycle taxi for about 20 baht from the station to my accommodation in town (read more aboutTraveling to Svay Rieng Province). Along the way, I saw worker shuttle trucks that looked warm and friendly, with many people sitting and standing simply on the truck. It was a very impressive way of life scene.
A Svay Rieng Style Breakfast, Curry Rice Like Home
On my first morning in Svay Rieng, I woke up early to walk the market and found that there are curry rice stalls just like at home. However, the serving method is interesting because in some Cambodian towns they don’t pour curry over rice, but in Svay Rieng they do, which makes it easier and tastier to eat.
My favorite dish is “Pa Lo,” which is the star of the curry rice stalls here. The Pa Lo flavor is very delicious, similar to ours but not as sweet as we are used to. Stir-fried pork with ginger is another common dish found in every Cambodian province, with a balanced rich taste that is not too spicy. The coconut milk curries here are not the restrained or greasy type found in some areas. Bamboo shoot curry is a dish I recommend trying; its flavor is rich and mellow like I have never encountered in many Cambodian provinces.
I highly recommend having a hearty breakfast here because it’s harder to find such satisfying food for lunch and dinner. Starting the day with familiar food really helps to recharge your energy.
Lifestyle and Dinner of Svay Rieng People
After exploring the morning market and strolling around Svay Rieng town (read more atTraveling in Svay Rieng Province), I tried the dinner here where people usually eat rice porridge with grilled fish. The grilled fish porridge here is charming in its simplicity and very mellow flavor. It tastes great without much seasoning.
I sat down to eat at a roadside porridge stall in town and saw locals coming in continuously. It was a warm and friendly atmosphere. Eating grilled fish porridge at night with soft chatting from neighbors reminded me of home.
Local Desserts and Sweets Not to Miss
Besides savory food, the morning market in Svay Rieng also offers many local sweets to try, such as Chok dessert (which I first encountered in Surin and then found again here). I don’t know the exact Khmer name for this dessert, but it has a nicely balanced sweetness. Children often sell this sweet on the streets, which is a charming sight reflecting the true culture of the community (read more details atLocal Sweets of Svay Rieng)
Another thing I was very impressed with is the Khmer ice cream sold in Svay Rieng town. It’s different from the Swensen’s style ice cream we have at home. It’s a sweet, fragrant ice cream bar with a unique flavor. Eating ice cream in the hot atmosphere of this border town is very refreshing (watch the Khmer ice cream clip atKhmer Ice Cream)
Recommended Accommodation and Atmosphere in Svay Rieng Town
For those interested in staying overnight in Svay Rieng town, I stayed at Tonlay Waiko Hotel located in town. The atmosphere is simple, rooms have cool air conditioning, and although there is no Wi-Fi, there is a restaurant and karaoke service. It’s suitable for those who want to truly experience the local atmosphere (read more hotel reviews atHotels in Svay Rieng Province)
Svay Rieng town looks quiet but is full of simple and warm local life. Walking around the private lake in town or visiting the morning market with locals helps you feel like you are truly experiencing the real life of the people here.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions
For me, mr.hotsia, the food and cuisine in Svay Rieng is one of the charms that strongly attracts travelers like me because many flavors and dishes are surprisingly connected to ours—from Pa Lo, stir-fried pork with ginger, bamboo shoot curry to grilled fish porridge at night. It made me feel warm as if eating at home, even though I was in Cambodia.
I recommend anyone traveling through this border province to stop and try local food at the morning market and curry rice stalls in town. Don’t forget to try grilled fish porridge in the evening. I guarantee you will have a unique and unforgettable experience.
