40 kilometers from Poipet, a major border city with Thailand, which shines more brightly. Traveling to Sisophon is very easy because all buses from Poipet heading to Siem Reap or the route to Battambang and Phnom Penh must pass through this city. At the Poipet bus station, there are buses available. For tourists, Poipet has two international tourist bus stations. The first is about ten kilometers from the city, and the other is right in Poipet city.
There are shuttle buses from the Cambodian immigration checkpoint that alternate daily to the station. You can take that bus to the station and then transfer to another bus to Sisophon or continue elsewhere conveniently. Accommodation in Sisophon is limited as it is a transit town with few tourists, but hotels here are not expensive like in Battambang. Rooms cost about 300 baht per night, with air conditioning, WIFI, and hot water. When I visited in August 2012, they were building a road in the city center, so there was quite a bit of dust. I saw about four hotels.
From what I observed, many people in Sisophon speak Thai. The restaurant I ate at was playing Thai TV, and there were people who spoke Thai as well. Many were born in Thailand. The food sold is similar to Thai cuisine. You probably already know that this area was once part of Thailand's Phibunsongkhram province before it became French territory during King Rama V's reign. I think this influenced the local food culture in Sisophon to resemble ours.
At night, people in Sisophon like to eat plain rice porridge or 'bobor' with gently grilled snakehead fish. They set up roadside stalls selling food and beer. There are also night venues in the city, including a nightclub in a downtown hotel and a karaoke bar about 3 kilometers out of town. Sisophon has a small river flowing near the city with a vehicle bridge. I spent evenings there like other locals. Besides the bridge, the riverbank has seating areas to enjoy the beautiful evening view.
In the evening, I saw many people sitting and enjoying the view. Young couples chatted on the bridge while cows walked home. I filmed the last clip of my trip covering all provinces of Cambodia at this bridge. Sisophon is an educational city like Mahasarakham in Thailand. The town has many young students and vibrant youth culture. The main attraction is the Banteay Chhmar temple, an ancient temple but newer than Angkor Wat.
Located about 60 kilometers north of Sisophon, Mr.Hotsia did not visit Banteay Chhmar temple but stayed one night in Sisophon. Activities I did included walking the evening and morning markets, riding a motorcycle to visit a mountain temple, and drinking a unique style of tea for me. I traveled here from Siem Reap and returned via Poipet. Mr.Hotsia August 2012. Mr.Hotsia recommends hotels in Sisophon and the Sisophon market, Cambodia.
