The Khmer Pyramid, Koh Ker, the Ancient Capital of the Khmer Empire http://www.hotsia.com > Preah Vihear Province > The Khmer Pyramid, Koh Ker, the Ancient Capital of the Khmer Empire Koh Ker is the name of an ancient temple complex and was the capital city of the Khmer Empire in the past. Koh Ker is located 100 km from Siem Reap. The city was built during the reign of King Jayavarman IV.

Around the years 921 to 944 AD (1464 to 1487 BE), Koh Ker was considered the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. It is commonly known as the Pyramid of the Khmer city. The Khmer built this city before moving to build Angkor Wat. Possibly due to inconvenient water supply, Koh Ker became a forgotten city hidden in the forest for thousands of years until it was rediscovered in 2003 (2546 BE).

This city was forgotten for 1,059 years. The main structure that amazed the world is the Khmer Pyramid that mr.hotsia takes you to visit on this trip. This pyramid has stone steps leading to the top. The walls surrounding the capital of Koh Ker are still thick and uniquely designed to avoid attacks. Many call the pyramid's stairway to heaven with small, steep steps.

From the tower's summit, you can see the mountains, the Preah Vihear temple, and Kulen mountain further away. The old capital city of Koh Ker covers 30 square kilometers. At the center of the kingdom is the pyramid I mentioned, made of large stones, called Prasat Thom temple in English, or Prasat Thom (Big Temple) in Khmer, where 'Thom' means big. Inside the old city of Koh Ker, there are hundreds of temples. Tens of thousands of slaves were killed during the 23 years of its construction.

Currently, visiting Koh Ker means touring Prasat Thom, the big temple resembling a pyramid. At the entrance, officials charge a 10 USD ticket fee per person. To visit, you must hire a taxi from Siem Reap or Tbeng Meanchey. When I visited, I hired a taxi from Tbeng Meanchey to Koh Ker and then back to Siem Reap for 50 USD. Another option is renting a motorcycle.

However, today in Siem Reap, there are no motorcycles for rent, only bicycles. You must find rentals elsewhere. When I visited the Koh Ker pyramid, there were no other tourists; it is a very quiet tourist spot. Climbing to the pyramid's summit is dangerous, but locals offer to guide you up for a 10 USD fee. I did not climb because it seemed the officials discouraged it except for secret climbs. So I only took photos and videos from below.

At Prasat Thom, there are few food stalls, some selling snacks and noodles nearby. At the entrance, there is a souvenir shop. If you want to stay overnight in the area, there are simple guesthouses in the village before entering Koh Ker. Camping or tenting is not allowed in the temple area. This area is a malaria risk zone, and some forest areas should not be entered due to possible landmines. mr.hotsia August 2012 recommends hotels in Preah Vihear.
