Nong Kaem, Harbin City, China: A true experience from mr.hotsia

This time, mr.hotsia had the chance to travel to Harbin, a city many know as the "Ice City" famous for its spectacular ice and snow festival. But for me, Harbin is not just about ice rinks or snow festivals. The daily life stories, community lifestyle, and food culture here are what made me fall in love with this city unexpectedly.

Journey to Harbin: Opening the Door to Northern China

Starting from Harbin Airport, about 4-5 hours direct flight from Bangkok, traveling here requires preparation for extreme cold winter weather. But mr.hotsia recommends that this cold is the charm that makes Harbin stand out. Once you leave the airport, you immediately feel the unique northern Chinese culture, different from big cities like Beijing or Shanghai.

Nong Kaem and Life in Harbin: Stories from Streets and Markets

As a real traveler, mr.hotsia chose to stroll and explore local markets and small streets where locals live their daily lives. Here I met “Nong Kaem,” a local little girl who became a small travel companion, opening a new world for me to see the unfiltered life of Harbin people. Nong Kaem took me to a fresh market full of fresh and unusual items I had never seen before, such as large river crabs, Beggar's Chicken (叫化鸡) which I have made and shared on my YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GlPxgDYeBo), and I also tasted Chinese-style fried chicken at Zhengxin Chicken Steak (正新鸡排), a must-try for anyone visiting Harbin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Who8G6NgToA).

Harbin Food: Unique Flavors Full of Stories

Harbin is a city where northern Chinese cuisine blends perfectly with Russian and Mongolian cultures. I tried thick, soft noodles at a small shop in an alley chosen by Nong Kaem. The seasoning was bold yet balanced, reminding me of noodles back home but with a distinct difference. Street food stalls in Harbin have a charm with the aroma of spices and high-heat cooking, making every bite full of energy and freshness.

There is also a local dish, Beggar's Chicken (叫化鸡), which takes several hours to prepare. I learned that wrapping the chicken with clay and leaves before baking is a traditional preservation method that enhances flavor. I tried making it myself and shared the experience on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GlPxgDYeBo). For those interested in deep northern Chinese cuisine, I highly recommend following this trail.

Harbin Atmosphere: Snow and an Unforgettable Charm

Although it is extremely cold in winter, Harbin is warm with the friendship of its people and continuous outdoor activities. I walked on streets covered with pure white snow, saw children ice skating, and families picnicking in the cold wind. These moments made me feel that this city is not just a travel destination but a second home for travelers like me.

Summary: Harbin is not just an Ice City but a Life Experience

From mr.hotsia’s journey, Harbin is a city full of stories, diverse local food, people's lifestyles, and a warm atmosphere in winter. Whether you seek cultural novelty or just want to escape the hustle of big cities, Harbin is the answer I recommend everyone to experience for themselves.
