Backpacking in Dibrugarh, Assam, India with mr.hotsia
This time, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel to Dibrugarh, located in Assam, in northeastern India. This city is the industrial center and the largest city of Assam. It is famous as a renowned tea city in India and serves as the gateway to the eastern region of the state. Traveling here is very convenient by train, road, or airport with direct international flights from Dibrugarh to Bangkok and Singapore.
I arrived in Dibrugarh in the evening before staying atHotel NatrajA budget hotel located in the city center. The hotel is clean with good service and prices cheaper than many major cities across India, making me feel comfortable and ready to explore the city the next day.
Lifestyle and atmosphere in Dibrugarh
Dibrugarh is not just a tea industry center but also full of vibrant local life with simple daily living. I wandered through small streets in the city and found local eateries that might look ordinary but serve incredibly flavorful and rich dishes. The chicken biryani and spiced curry here have a unique aroma.
The fresh market in Dibrugarh is full of colorful vegetables, fruits, and fresh ingredients sold by locals. I tried local fruits rarely seen in big Indian city markets. Passing by, I saw people chatting happily, children playing in the streets, and elders resting under trees, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere I enjoyed.
Travel and connections to other cities in Assam
Dibrugarh is well connected to other important cities in Assam. I traveled to Margherita, not far away, by car rented from the hotel. The route between the two cities is filled with views of tea gardens and winding mountains that made me breathe deeply and fully.
For those interested in the Thai community in Margherita, I recommend readingBackpacking to find the Thai community in Margherita, Assam, Indiawhere I detailed the Tai Phake community there, including local food and fascinating culture.
Additionally, I traveled to Tinsukia nearby to explore another side of Assam. To learn more about this city, you can read my story atBackpacking to find the Thai community in Tinsukia, Assam, Indiawhich includes details of the lifestyle and food I experienced.
A unique tea city
What makes Dibrugarh special and charming is the vast tea gardens surrounding the city. These gardens are not just tea production sites but part of the locals' way of life. I had the chance to visit a tea garden open to the public to experience traditional tea production. Visiting a tea garden is a must when coming to Dibrugarh; missing it would be a great loss.
Assam tea is world-famous for its strong flavor and unique aroma. As a food-loving traveler, I, mr.hotsia, fell in love with the tea here from fresh garden tea to desserts made with tea. I guarantee you will love it too.
Walking experience in downtown Dibrugarh
In the evening, walking in the city center, I found the pedestrian street bustling with people shopping for food and daily necessities. Street food stalls filled the air with the aroma of spices and local Indian dishes. I tasted many dishes, from chicken biryani and hot curry to freshly made street snacks right in front of me.
Dibrugarh's atmosphere is not as hectic as big Indian cities like Mumbai or Delhi. It feels like walking in a small town full of warmth and the simple life of locals.
Travel tips for visiting Dibrugarh
If you plan to visit Assam, don't miss the chance to explore Dibrugarh, the gateway to the eastern part of the state. Travel is convenient with an airport offering international connections, as well as well-connected rail and road systems. I flew from Guwahati to get here quickly.
For getting around the city, I, mr.hotsia, recommend using taxi apps like Uber, which offer fair prices and more convenience than hailing taxis on the street. Also, buying an Indian SIM card will help you easily book taxis and communicate.
Connecting travel within Assam
Not only Dibrugarh, but Assam also has many interesting cities like Guwahati, the lively capital with diverse cultures.
