Street Food Tour on Mohammed Ali Road, Mumbai by mr.hotsia

When talking about Mumbai, one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse cities in India, what I, mr.hotsia, never miss is diving into the street food here, especially in the Mohammed Ali Road area, which is a hub of authentic Indian flavors that are rich and spicy like nowhere else.

This time I decided to explore on foot deep into the alleys of Mohammed Ali Road. The best time I found was from evening to night because the atmosphere is bustling with locals and many tourists gathering to experience a variety of flavors, from small street carts to dimly lit food stalls. The aroma of spices and freshly cooked food is so enticing that it’s almost impossible to just walk past.

The starting point of the street food tour with mr.hotsia

I started by trying “Gulab Jamun,” a golden brown sweet that looks like round balls soaked in sweet syrup. When bitten into, you experience the soft texture of the dough with the fragrant sweetness of the syrup that is not overly cloying. It’s a perfect dessert for those who want to cut the spiciness from the main dishes.

Then I walked on to the stall selling “Mumbai Fried Chicken” that I had seen inmy own Mumbai Fried Chicken videoLarge pieces of chicken coated in crispy batter with a balanced spicy flavor, fried until golden and crispy outside but tender inside. The aroma of spices mixed with the chicken meat makes it almost impossible to stop eating.

Falling in love with the flavor in every bite

Mohammed Ali Road doesn’t only have fried chicken but also “Pav Bhaji,” soft bread served with a rich vegetable curry, topped with melted butter on hot bread. What I like most is the curry’s spicy but not overpowering flavor, making every next bite something you want to keep eating. For those who love spicy food, I highly recommend trying it.Bread dipped in spicy curry, Indian food in Mumbaiwhich I have written about before because it’s a dish that truly makes you feel the essence of authentic India.

Along the way, there are also “Sambar” and “Paratha,” crispy fried dough eaten with various dips and curries that I tried and must say are so delicious I want to come back and eat many times. Additionally, there are stalls selling strong-flavored “Chai” that refresh you after eating spicy food almost unbearable.

Street life and markets in Mumbai

Walking and eating along Mohammed Ali Road, I saw another side of Mumbai—not just a busy big city but a community full of life. The people here are friendly and warmly open to tourists like me. Sometimes I chatted with vendors about the ingredients and cooking methods, which made me realize that every dish I ate had a story and intention behind it.

If you are interested in experiencing the lively and fresh markets of Mumbai, I recommend stopping bythe large seaside fish market of MumbaiHere, besides fresh seafood, there are street food stalls serving local-style seafood dishes that satisfy both locals and tourists alike.
