Backpacking in Mumbai: The city of Bombay full of life and street vibes

When it comes to backpacking in India, the name “Mumbai,” or as many still call it “Bombay,” is definitely at the top of my list, mr.hotsia. Because Mumbai is not just a big chaotic city, it is a place full of stories, local lifestyles, and street food colors that anyone who visits will fall in love with.

The last time I truly experienced Mumbai, I chose to backpack starting from the large seaside fish market of Mumbai, famous for its fresh seafood and lively fishing community atmosphere (for those interested, you can read the details atLarge seaside fish market of Mumbai). Although it looks raw, it is full of life and the scent of the sea mixed with smoke from street food stalls, making me feel like traveling back in time to old Bombay that still clearly retains its identity as a port and fishing community.

Exploring street food in Mumbai

Mumbai is a city where street food is truly the heart of tourism. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to try many street foods, ranging fromlocal Mumbai dishesto snacks like spicy curry-dipped bread with rich and balanced flavors (those who like strong flavors should check outCurry-dipped bread, Indian food in Mumbai)

I clearly remember the Mumbai fried chicken stall I found on the street, the aroma of spices was so tempting that I had to order and taste it immediately (if you want to see the street food atmosphere with me in Mumbai, check out the videoMumbai Fried Chicken (Mumbai)It’s fun and very atmospheric). Besides fried chicken, street fried rice at the Mumbai fish market is equally delicious (Street fried rice at Mumbai fish market) Here you will taste the fragrant fried rice mixed perfectly with various spices.

Lifestyle and travel in the city that never sleeps

Mumbai is a city where you will feel nonstop chaos. Vehicles and people are dense all the time. But what made me, mr.hotsia, fall in love was seeing the real lifestyle of the locals—not just ordinary city people but those living vibrantly and full of effort.

For the most convenient and economical travel in Mumbai, I recommend using the local train, which is considered the city’s lifeline. Riding the local train, you will see a diverse range of people using the service, from students and office workers to vendors carrying their goods diligently.

If you enjoy seaside atmosphere, I recommend taking a walk atSeaside Street Food in MumbaiThis area offers cool sea breeze and fresh street food. It’s another side of Mumbai that impressed me greatly.

Backpacking tips for Mumbai from mr.hotsia

From my experience backpacking in Mumbai, I want friends to prepare well for health and safety because although this city is charming, it is also complex and chaotic. Carrying drinking water and choosing to eat cleaner food will help make your trip smoother.

Another important thing is to open your heart and talk with the locals here. Sometimes just asking for directions or exchanging stories with street vendors gives you new perspectives you won’t find in books or typical travel websites.

Summary of impressions from Mumbai in mr.hotsia’s view

For me, Mumbai is a city you must walk yourself and taste yourself to understand how the chaos and diversity of this city have their own charm. Experiencing the real lifestyle of the people here, along with the bold and unique flavors of street food, is something you won’t find anywhere else.

If you want to see the real atmosphere through my camera, you can watch the videoMumbai 14/25: Backpacking Guide to Mumbai Bombay Indiawhich takes you to experience the close-up atmosphere.
