Travel to Darjeeling, the city of mist and the charm of Nepal in India
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel from Kolkata, the bustling major city of India, to Darjeeling, a small town located in the Himalayas. It was my intended destination to experience the cool atmosphere and beautiful mountain views of northern India. This journey was not as easy as expected because it required careful planning and choosing the right travel method suitable for the winding mountain roads and rapidly changing weather conditions.
Starting at Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri, the gateway to the Nepal region in India, I chose a direct flight from Kolkata to reduce travel time and manage fatigue from the long journey. Then I took a hired jeep taxi to Darjeeling. The price for a private car might be a bit high but worth it for safety and comfort, as the mountain roads are winding and some parts are very steep. Choosing a local experienced driver is highly recommended by mr.hotsia.
For those who want an adventurous style and to truly experience the local atmosphere, there is also the option to take the train up to Darjeeling, which is famous for its beautiful and romantic views. However, I have not had the chance to fully try this part yet. Next time, I will definitely share more details.
Darjeeling, a small town full of stories and cultural fusion
Although Darjeeling is not a very large town, it is where Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indian cultures blend interestingly. The streets are filled with small shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and local foods that are hard to find in big cities. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking around the local markets in the morning because it allows me to see the real lifestyle of the locals—the buying and selling, conversations, and the aroma of food filling the air.
One dish not to miss is Momo, Tibetan-style dumplings with various fillings ranging from meat to fresh vegetables. Eating them with spicy dipping sauce at a small street shop is a great way to recharge after a tiring journey.
Travel tips and things to know from mr.hotsia
During the journey up to Darjeeling, I learned that using local drivers who are familiar with the routes is very important because the mountain roads are complex and some spots can be dangerous. Also, the weather changes very quickly here. The morning skies are clear and beautiful, but in the afternoon, thick fog and rain may occur, requiring extra caution while driving.
For those visiting northern India with some extra time, don’t forget to visit nearby places that mr.hotsia has been impressed by, such asTeesta RiverNot far from Darjeeling, the Teesta River area has sacred sites like the Samdruptse Statue or Buddha Park, which are places of worship for local Buddhists and offer stunning mountain views on clear days.
Food and culture that impressed me
Besides Momo, I also tried many local dishes blending Nepalese and Tibetan cultures, such as rich-flavored soups with unique spices. These dishes are not only delicious but also give a warm feeling, like food made by a mother.
One memorable moment was experiencing the local lifestyle, including tasting the local millet wine called “Tumba,” a traditional Nepalese liquor from the surrounding area. Although Darjeeling is a small town, the warmth and hospitality of the people here made me feel at home.
Unforgettable travel experience of mr.hotsia
This trip allowed me, mr.hotsia, to see another side of India that many may not know. Darjeeling is not just a typical tourist town but a connection point of unique cultures, landscapes, and people. What I learned and experienced along the way was more valuable than just taking beautiful photos or watching views from a hotel.
If you love adventure, nature, and want to experience a different way of life, I recommend seriously planning a trip to Darjeeling. Don’t forget to prepare your travel arrangements carefully, especially choosing a driver skilled in mountain routes for your safety and peace of mind.
