Tad Lo Waterfall, Tad Hang Waterfall, Tad Su Waterfall - The heart of Salavan Province's waterways
When talking about Salavan Province in Laos, the fame ofTad Lo Waterfalloften stands out as one of the top natural attractions here. But actually, this area also has two other waterfalls equally interesting, which areTad Hang WaterfallandTad Su Waterfalleach with its own charm and atmosphere depending on the mountain slopes and the height of each waterfall.
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to personally experience the beauty of these three waterfalls. I must say that reaching Salavan Province is not easy because the roads are not as developed as in big cities. But the rawness and naturalness here impressed me the most.
The route to the waterfalls and the Tin Waterfall community
My journey started from Tha Tang, Sekong Province, where a local minibus runs to Ban Bang, then continues to Khua Se market. The distance from Ban Bang to Khua Se is about 6 kilometers. I chose to walk to experience the atmosphere and the villagers' way of life along the way, seeing the simple and warm rural Lao lifestyle.
At Tin Waterfall village, not far from Tad Lo Waterfall, is a small community that impressed me the most on this trip. The locals told me that guesthouses here are very affordable compared to the comfort and peaceful river views. It's perfect for those who want to relax slowly for several days. The villagers warmly welcome tourists with kindness that is rare in today's world.
The three waterfalls with different experiences
Tad Su Waterfallis the highest waterfall on the route, flowing down the mountain slopes and joining Tad Lo Waterfall below. The distance from the village accommodation to Tad Su Waterfall is about 10 kilometers. The path is quite challenging and suitable for those who enjoy a bit of adventure, as it requires walking through forests and slippery rocky trails.
Tad Lo Waterfall, the highlight of this area, is a medium-sized waterfall ideal for swimming to cool off rather than just taking beautiful photos. The pure water flows cool all year round, perfect for swimming and snorkeling in the shallow pools in front of the accommodations, which locals also use for bathing and washing clothes naturally.
Tad Hang Waterfall is the lowest waterfall on the water flow route from Tad Su and Tad Lo before continuing as the Xe River at the village. It has a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for resting after several hours of travel. I enjoyed sitting and watching the water flow slowly, truly letting my mind drift with nature.
Lifestyle and atmosphere around the waterfalls
While staying at Tin Waterfall village, I had the opportunity to talk with many locals who still live traditionally, practicing sustainable agriculture and fishing in the Xe River. Most villagers speak the local Lao dialect and live simply. I saw children playing in the water and happily helping their families with daily chores.
However, when I visited, there was a Chinese oil drilling project with hundreds of workers, causing dusty roads. I had to leave quickly because I didn't like that kind of air much. But it was an experience reflecting the changes happening in this area.
Accommodation, food, and transportation within the area
At Tin Waterfall village, there are several budget guesthouses. The food here is delicious and reasonably priced, with small restaurants offering local dishes like grilled chicken, Lao papaya salad, and sticky rice that perfectly complement the waterfalls. For those wanting to try grilled pork pan or chill with Lao beer, you need to walk back about 1 kilometer to Khua Se market, where there are bars and motorcycle rentals for only 70,000 kip per day.
For travelers wanting to visit Tad Lo Waterfall, there are several routes to choose from. I have written detailed recommendations in the articleTraveling to Tad Lo Waterfallwhich will make your trip planning much easier, especially if you choose to travel from Pakse or Tha Tang.
Salavan Province, a peaceful city worth visiting
If you are interested in traveling to Salavan Province to experience nature and local culture, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping by Salavan city where the Sedone River flows through. It is a beautiful and quiet viewpoint, perfect for relaxing after waterfall adventures.Explore Salavanwill show you another side of Laos that is not crowded and still preserves its authenticity.
For those who love local food, I recommend the famous pho restaurant Nang Taew in Salavan. They serve pork offal pho, which is hard to find elsewhere, with a very rich and flavorful broth. Read more details atSalavan PhoI believe you will fall in love with the taste and atmosphere here just like I did.
