Travel Salavan, Salavan Province, Laos with mr.hotsia

When it comes to provinces in Laos that I, mr.hotsia, know and am most familiar with, one of them must beSalavanfor sure. Salavan is a province with stories and ties to Thailand dating back long ago, especially with the old song "Salavan Gets Smaller" which many Thais have heard and are familiar with. Visiting Salavan in person feels like traveling back in time while opening new experiences at the same time.

Salavan Province is located in southern Laos. It requires a fair amount of time and effort to travel there because the routes to other provinces, especially Savannakhet, are still not very convenient. I chose to travel from Sekong city, passing Tha Tang towards Tad Lo Waterfall before entering Salavan city. This route gives a true traveler's feeling—requiring patience and good planning—but the beauty is well worth it.

Traveling to Salavan and Tad Lo Waterfall

The route I chose started from Tha Tang, Sekong Province, which is the meeting point for local minibuses heading to Ban Bang. Then I walked about 6 kilometers to Kua Se Market. This area is a popular lodging spot for tourists.Tad Lo WaterfallThis is the most famous waterfall in this province. I once took a local vehicle from Ban Bang to Kua Se, which allowed me to closely observe the community atmosphere and the lifestyle of the local Lao people.

For those who want a bit more convenience, you can also travel from Pakse by bus passing through Salavan and Kua Se Market. The charm of this route lies in the natural and simple rural landscapes on both sides of the road.

Tad Lo Waterfall, Tad Hang Waterfall, and Tad Su Waterfall

Tad Lo Waterfall is not very tall but perfect for swimming during the hot season. The water is clear, cool, and flows moderately strong, allowing me and my travel companions to fully enjoy swimming in nature. Around the waterfall is the small village of Tin Tad, a charming community where locals live simply and warmly welcome tourists. There are budget guesthouses with local food available. I have stayed here several nights. Although there was road construction and quite a lot of dust during my visit, the overall atmosphere makes it a truly worthwhile place to visit and relax.

Besides Tad Lo, there are two other waterfalls:Tad Hang Waterfalland Tad Su Waterfall

Tad Su Waterfall is about 10 kilometers from the lodging village. These three waterfalls are connected by a stream flowing through the village called "Nam Se," a small river that brings freshness and genuine natural beauty to the area.

Exploring Salavan City

After visiting the waterfalls, I traveled into Salavan city, where the Sedone River flows through the center. The riverside view is very beautiful. Watching the sunset by the Sedone River here was a very impressive experience for me, mr.hotsia. Salavan city looks peaceful and spacious, with a town hall, government offices, and several police stations, showing that this city is the administrative and service center of the province.

There is also a large Vietnamese community in the city, similar to Sekong and Attapeu. I tried Vietnamese food at a famous pho restaurant calledNang Taew RestaurantHere, they serve pho made from pork offal, a dish not commonly found in Laos. The soup is flavorful with sweet tomatoes and crispy pork, so delicious that I had to return several times. The restaurant is always crowded, showing that both locals and tourists truly enjoy it.

I must say that food in Salavan mainly focuses on sticky rice and grilled chicken. There are many interesting local restaurants. If you want to try a simple but flavorful dish, try sticky rice with grilled chicken paired with authentic Lao dipping sauce. I guarantee you'll love it as much as I do.

Further Travel and Additional Information

For those interested in traveling from Salavan to other provinces like Savannakhet, I, mr.hotsia, once took a VIP bus departing at 2 PM. This route detours through Pakse. The distance is not far but takes a long time because the bus stops frequently to pick up souvenirs. To save time, I recommend taking a direct bus from Salavan to Pakse, which is faster with fewer stops. For more travel details, you can readTravel story from Salavan to Xeno, Savannakhet

For those who enjoy detailed city views and riverside atmosphere, I recommend watchingSalavan City Videothat I recorded, so you can see the real images of this city as I experienced, includingthe beautiful and peaceful Sedone River viewwhich is rare to find in big cities.

Summary of Salavan Experience with mr.hotsia

For me, Salavan is a province with its own unique charm—historical stories, ties with Thailand, the lifestyle of locals, the peacefulness of the city, and beautiful nature, especially Tad Lo Waterfall, which is the heart of tourism here. Although the routes are inconvenient and require more travel time than other places, for those who love authenticity and simple living, Salavan is the answer worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

If you plan to visit Salavan, I recommend preparing your travel and accommodation in advance. Don't forget to try the pho at Nang Taew Restaurant and take an evening walk by the Sedone River. I assure you will have a unique and unforgettable travel experience.
