Opening the Door to Mukdahan, the Gateway to Laos and Vietnam
Hello dear readers, I am mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to travel through Mukdahan Province, which is a key gateway directly connecting Thailand with Laos. It is also the starting point of the route to Vietnam. Today, I will share my experience exploring various places in Mukdahan on the Thai side, along with experiencing the riverside lifestyle of the Mekong River and the fascinating border town atmosphere that is just as interesting as anywhere else.
Mukdahan Tower, a Must-Visit Mekong River Viewpoint
Start the trip by heading up toMukdahan Towerwhich is located on a small hill built specifically as a viewpoint. I visited during the daytime; the fresh air and sunlight made the view of the Mekong River stretching to the horizon incredibly beautiful. This place is perfect for taking photos to capture the atmosphere of the Mekong River flowing between two countries. Additionally, it is peaceful and quiet, ideal for resting after a long drive.
Winding through Somdet Ya Park and the City Guardian Shrine
Besides the prominent tower, I recommend stopping bySomdet Ya Park, Don Tan Districtwhich is a shady public park where locals and tourists often relax. Also, the City Guardian Shrinewhich holds spiritual significance for the people of Mukdahan. I saw people making merit and paying respects with reverence, reflecting the strong bond between the people and this place very well.
Chumphon Khet Udomsak Shrine and City Pillar Shrine
Another place I did not miss wasChumphon Khet Udomsak Shrineand the City Pillar Shrine
Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge
If you come to Mukdahan, don’t miss visitingthe Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge
Indo Market, a Colorful Cultural Market
Next to the Friendship Bridge, I had the chance to stop byIndo Marketa market full of colorful foods and diverse products, blending Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese cultures perfectly. I got to taste spicy Isan dishes and traditional Vietnamese food such as nem nuong and freshly made banh cuon sold in this market. There are also unique local souvenirs and handwoven fabrics. I consider this a fun and worthwhile stop for shopping and resting.
Mekong Riverside Dam and Mekong River Boat Tour
One of the activities I was very impressed with was visitingthe Mekong Riverside Damwhich is a spot where the Mekong River is wide and beautiful. The atmosphere here is peaceful, perfect for relaxing and watching the sunset. I also took a boat tour on the Mekong River in the evening, an enchanting experience admiring the beauty of the two riverbanks that are different yet harmoniously connected. The boat ride allowed me to see the riverside villagers’ way of life, including fishing and small-scale gardening, preserving simplicity and a close bond with nature.
Connecting to Savannakhet, Savannakhet Province, Laos
For travelers interested in crossing to the Lao side, I recommend researching routes and information fromMukdahan-Savannakhet International Checkpointwhich is the main checkpoint commonly used by Thais and Laotians. Especially if you want to extend your trip toSavannakhetan important port city in Laos with attractions like Phra That Ing Hang and Bueng Wa, which I have written about in other articles. This makes it convenient for those wanting to tour Laos and Vietnam connected through Mukdahan.
