Don Tan, Mukdahan: A Small Riverside Town with Extraordinary Charm

When talking about Don Tan District in Mukdahan Province, many people might not be very familiar with the name because it is not a main border crossing or a bustling tourist town. But for me, mr.hotsia, visiting Don Tan was an experience that revealed another fascinating side of the Mekong riverside, filled with deep cultural stories beyond what I expected.

Don Tan is located on the Thai side of the Mekong River before reaching Chanuman District in Amnat Charoen Province. Across the river is the city of Xaiphothong in Savannakhet Province, Laos. This is not a permanent border checkpoint but a temporary relaxation point where people on both sides of the river maintain close social and cultural ties. I stopped to enjoy the Mekong view here in the afternoon when the sun was not too harsh. The Mekong flows gently with small boats paddling by. The atmosphere is peaceful and simple, something hard to find in big cities.

The Great Mohorathuek Drum at Matchimawat Temple: A Precious Treasure of Don Tan

One thing I could not miss when visiting Don Tan was the “Mohorathuek Drum,” the largest in Thailand, located at Matchimawat Temple in the district near the Mekong River. I had heard about this drum from studying the culture of the Zhuang people in Guangxi Province, China. The Mohorathuek Drum has a long history and is a ritual symbol used to worship frogs and pray for rain to ensure the fertility of the fields.

On the day I passed by this temple, many people still came to pay respects to the drum. However, I did not go in for a detailed look as I was not specifically prepared. Nevertheless, I could sense the importance of this ancient artifact and the traditional culture still preserved in this small community. Anyone interested in local culture and history should not miss Matchimawat Temple.

Connecting Don Tan with Savannakhet through Transport Routes and Border Checkpoints

For travelers wanting to cross into Laos, Don Tan is close to Savannakhet Province, which is very important economically and culturally. Savannakhet hasSavannakhet Bus Stationwhich connects conveniently with Mukdahan and major cities in Laos, Vietnam, and Vientiane. Buses from Savannakhet to Mukdahan run every hour from morning until evening, making travel between the two sides of the Mekong very smooth.

If anyone is interested in a full Laos trip, I have written aboutTraveling Savannakhetwhich is full of beautiful temples and nature, as well as local markets offering many native foods to try. There is also a convenient route onward to Vietnam.

Riverside Life at Don Tan

One of the joys of coming to Don Tan is watching the lifestyle of the riverside villagers. Here, people still rely on the river for their livelihood—fishing, paddling boats, and farming the surrounding land. I enjoyed walking along the riverbank, seeing small boats lined up and children playing happily in the Mekong waters.

The small district market sells local products including fresh vegetables, fruits, and local dishes with enticing aromas such as Lao papaya salad, Nam Tok, and hot sticky rice, which are distinctive of the Isan region and Laos. I once stopped to buy snacks by the roadside and sat enjoying the Mekong view. Such flavors and atmosphere are hard to find elsewhere.

Mukdahan: The Gateway City to Laos and Vietnam

Visiting Don Tan reminded me of the broader journey in Mukdahan, a province adjacent to the main border checkpoint with Savannakhet. Mukdahan is considered a convenient and fast gateway to Laos and Vietnam. I have written aboutExciting Travel in Mukdahanwhich features a vibrant night market rich with a blend of Isan and Vietnamese cuisines.

There are various accommodations here ranging from budget to mid-range. I stayed at Sup Mukda Hotel in the city center, which is very convenient for crossing to Savannakhet. For those interested in trying their luck, Savannakhet also has casinos popular among Thai tourists.

Mekong Riverside Travel Experience I, mr.hotsia, Want to Share

If you love traveling and want to experience the atmosphere of a small riverside town that truly preserves local culture, Don Tan is a very interesting destination. I recommend taking your time to stroll along the Mekong, visit Matchimawat Temple to see the precious “Mohorathuek Drum,” and taste local food at the district market.

Additionally, if you have time, try extending your trip to Savannakhet or Mukdahan, which I have detailed inTraveling SavannakhetandExciting Travel in MukdahanI guarantee this trip will be full of impressive nature, culture, and diverse food. This journey made me, mr.hotsia, truly understand and feel the warmth of the people along the Mekong River.
