Thai-Lao Market Bueng Kan: Riverside Colors You Must Try

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I take you to stroll through the Thai-Lao Market in Bueng Kan Province. This market is located on the banks of the Mekong River, opposite Pakxan town, Bolikhamxay Province, Laos. It is a fascinating and charming meeting point of two countries.

Bueng Kan Province is a small province recently separated from Nong Khai, but it holds much charm and many stories. Especially along the Mekong riverside, there is a market held every Tuesday and Friday. This market is simply called the "Lao Market," but in reality, it is a mixed market of Thai and Lao people. Lao vendors bring forest and natural products they catch or grow to sell, while Thai vendors also sell their goods. This makes the market lively and colorful like no other.

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to experience the atmosphere of this market myself. I must say that this market is not just a place for general trading but a space that perfectly blends the lifestyles and cultures of people on both sides of the Mekong.

Strolling through the morning market and riverside market

Starting that morning, I walked through the Bueng Kan morning market first. This morning market is not much different from other morning markets in the Isan region. But when I crossed over to the Thai-Lao market, I could clearly sense a distinct difference.

Here, many rare forest products are sold, such as local wild vegetables that are hard to find, as well as small aquatic and land animals caught by Lao people. Sometimes, I found things I had never seen before, like the nine-tailed gecko, which is said to bring luck and love. I once saw a two-tailed gecko at Luang Prabang market, but here I found the nine-tailed gecko. The prices vary from a little over 100 baht to 200 baht each. These items are not hard to find at this Thai-Lao market.

Besides forest products, fresh vegetables, frogs, and natural products caught from the Lao side are also sold here. Most Lao sellers catch these themselves or have more time than the Thai side, making the goods diverse, unusual, and fresher than typical markets in Thailand.

Clothing and riverside goods: A market not just for food

Walking a bit further along the Mekong riverside, from the fresh market to the Riverside Hotel, about 200 meters, there are stalls selling clothes, daily necessities, and various products. Thai and Lao people bustle about, shopping almost non-stop. I tried to find a T-shirt with "Bueng Kan Province" print but it was not yet available. I was told they are in production and should be available soon.

This riverside market is therefore more than just a market for forest products and food; it is a meeting place for people from both sides, presenting culture through goods, clothing, and conversations in the peaceful Mekong riverside atmosphere.

Travel and accommodation in Bueng Kan

For those who want to visit this market, mr.hotsia recommends that you don’t need to drive yourself. There are direct buses from Bangkok to Bueng Kan, which are convenient and not too tiring. There are several accommodations in town, such as Samran Hotel or Riverside Hotel, costing no more than 400 baht per night, comfortable and affordable.

If you want to explore Bueng Kan Province, I recommend using hotel transport services to visit various places. It’s much more convenient than driving yourself because the locations are quite far apart, and driving might be too tiring.
