Thrilling experience at Phu Thok Temple, Bueng Kan, Laos

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to cross the Mekong River to Bolikhamxay Province, Laos, to experience Phu Thok Temple. The Seka District of Bueng Kan Province, Thailand, is directly opposite this location. Phu Thok Temple is located atop Phu Thok Mountain. It is a famous and unique meditation site because of its unusual steel staircases built along steep cliffs, allowing monks and pilgrims to reach the high area where the monks’ dwellings are, truly isolated from the outside world.

Climbing up to Phu Thok Temple is not easy. The stairs are steep steel steps in multiple sections, some feeling like walking on air and others requiring climbing along the cliff face. It took me about 30 minutes to reach the summit, including breaks to film clips and capture beautiful surrounding views. The first part is very tiring due to the physical effort needed, but after one or two sections, the atmosphere changes to cool breezes and open views of Bueng Kan city and the beautiful flowing Mekong River.

Honestly, this place is truly thrilling and dangerous. The stairs are anchored to the cliff using steel rods driven into the rock. Some sections have handrails and rain shelters, but you must be extremely careful because carelessness could lead to fatal falls. I recommend that anyone not physically prepared or afraid of heights avoid climbing Phu Thok. Also, when visiting the temple, please maintain respectful behavior and keep noise to a minimum. Avoid using selfie sticks or making loud noises that disturb the monks still residing here.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle Around Phu Thok Temple

The area around Phu Thok Temple remains simple and peaceful, much like Bueng Kan Province, which I have visited before (Traveling in Bueng Kan Province). Bueng Kan city is a small town with one busy main road, and most houses are old wooden structures that feel warm and welcoming. I once biked around the town, tasted local food, and chatted with the locals, feeling a strong connection as if it were my own home.

Upon reaching Phu Thok Temple, you will see views of the Mekong River cutting through mountain ranges and lush green forests stretching to the horizon. It is a rare and stunning sight. The tranquility here helped me feel refreshed and truly witness the wonders of nature.

Travel Tips

If you plan to experience the thrill and serenity of Phu Thok Temple, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing your body well. Climbing these long, steep stairs requires strength. Also, wear appropriate shoes and don’t forget to bring drinking water.

Additionally, traveling to Phu Thok Temple is more convenient if you have a private car or rent one in Bueng Kan city. The temple is about 30 kilometers from the city and 20 kilometers from Seka District. You can stop by the Thai-Lao riverside market, a cultural connection point between Thailand and Laos, or try local food in Bueng Kan city before heading up the mountain (Thai-Lao Riverside Market, Bueng Kan)

Connecting travel to Pakxan and Bolikhamxay Province

I extended this trip to Pakxan city on the Lao side in Bolikhamxay Province, an area rich in history and culture, including the famous Pakxan Rose song in this region (Traveling Pakxan, Bolikhamxay). Traveling from Bueng Kan to Pakxan requires crossing by ferry at Pakxan checkpoint, then continuing by car to various towns. The service is convenient and available throughout the day (Pakxan Transport)

If you visit Pakxan, I recommend trying local dishes and enjoying different views of the Mekong River, as well as experiencing the simple and charming lifestyle of the Lao villagers.

Summary of Experience by mr.hotsia

Phu Thok Temple in Bueng Kan, Laos, is a place I, mr.hotsia, was very impressed with — from the challenge of climbing the mountain stairs, the beautiful scenery, to the peaceful atmosphere rarely found in big cities. However, I must warn that this place is not for the faint-hearted or those physically unprepared due to the height and real risks involved.

If you want to experience nature and the traditional culture of Bueng Kan Province and Bolikhamxay Province in Laos, Phu Thok Temple is a must-visit choice.
