Kong Lor Cave, Khammouane: The gateway to the underground world of Khammouane Province

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I want to invite everyone to adventure into one of Laos' world-famous caves that everyone must visit, which isKong Lor CaveLocated in Khammouane Province, this place is not only famous for its cave length of up to 7 kilometers but also for its stunning stalactites and stalagmites that are so captivating I couldn't stop taking photos.

I used Google Earth to measure the straight distance from the cave entrance to the exit, which is about 4 kilometers. However, when I traveled by boat along the winding waterway inside the cave, the actual distance is likely around 7 kilometers. The boat used inside the cave is a small motorized boat that fits about 3 people. The rental price is 100,000 kip per boat (approximately 400 baht), and there is an entrance fee of 5,000 kip per person.

The atmosphere inside Kong Lor Cave is unlike any ordinary cave I've seen because there is a large hall with electricity, allowing us to clearly see the details of the stalactites and stalagmites. The challenge is that some parts of the cave require wading through water, and sometimes you have to get off the boat to push it yourself, so you will definitely get wet. Therefore, anyone planning to visit this cave should prepare clothes that are okay to get wet. Avoid wearing your favorite clothes that you don't want to get wet.

At the cave entrance, there are services to rent flashlights and sandals. The rental fee for a flashlight is 5,000 kip, and sandals are also 5,000 kip. This is for convenience and safety because some parts of the cave are very dark, and having a flashlight helps a lot.

Travel and Accommodation: I chose to stay at Ban Nahin

To get to Kong Lor Cave, I recommend starting fromBan Nahinwhich is about 50 kilometers from the main Saw junction. From Ban Nahin, there is a shuttle service to Kong Lor Cave about 42 kilometers away. The vehicles run regularly, so you don't have to worry much about transportation.

I chose to stay at Ban Nahin because there are several accommodations and restaurants with affordable prices starting at just 200 baht per night. I stayed there for one night and left early the next morning to visit Kong Lor Cave. When I returned, I strolled around Ban Nahin market, a small but charming market with many delicious local foods to try.

Ban Nahin is a great starting point for visiting Kong Lor Cave and also for exploring other caves in Khammouane Province. If anyone is interested in renting a motorcycle like I did, I highly recommend it. The price is about 80,000 kip or 320 baht per day, allowing you to freely explore various caves.Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Caveare also located in Khammouane Province and are very interesting.

Khammouane Province: A cave and nature destination waiting for you to discover

Khammouane Province is not just home to Kong Lor Cave but is also full of other fascinating caves such asPhra Thongkam Cavewhich houses many ancient Buddha statues, orThe Giant Wall of the Funan Empirean ancient historical site that is truly impressive. I, mr.hotsia, have experienced all of these and highly recommend everyone to come and explore here.

Khammouane also has Tha Khaek town, located opposite Nakhon Phanom Province in Thailand, serving as a cultural and lifestyle connection between the two sides of the Mekong River. I enjoy watching the Mekong view at night from Tha Khaek.Nightlife at Tha Khaek, Mekong RiverHere, there are restaurants and a chill riverside atmosphere to relax after a full day of cave exploration.

My real experience at Kong Lor Cave

When I arrived at Kong Lor Cave, I was very excited because I had heard its reputation for a long time and wanted to experience the grandeur of this cave myself. Traveling by boat into the cave felt like entering a mysterious underground world. The emerald green water reflected the lights, creating a scene like a painting.

Along the way, the boat passed through narrow cave passages, and at some points, I had to get off to help push the boat with the driver, which made the adventure even more fun. It was a feeling unlike any other cave trip I've had and unforgettable.

In the large hall of the cave, there are uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites that beautifully reflect the light. I spent time taking photos and fully appreciating the natural wonders here.
