Explore Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Cave in Khammouane Province, Laos with mr.hotsia

When it comes to Khammouane Province in Laos, many might not be very familiar with the name yet, but for mr.hotsia, this place is truly a land of fascinating limestone caves, especiallyNang Aen CaveandChiang Liap Cavewhich are two caves I had the chance to experience myself. For this trip, I chose to rent a motorcycle for 80,000 kip per day (about 320 baht) to have the freedom to travel and stop by other caves in Khammouane Province as well.

Renting a motorcycle here is something mr.hotsia highly recommends because this route has many caves to explore. Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Cave are on the same route as Phra In Cave, a compact cave suitable for a relaxed visit before heading to Kong Lo Cave, which is famous for being large and stretching up to 7 kilometers (I have previously written aboutKong Lo Cave, Khammouane)

Atmosphere and journey to Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Cave

Early in the morning, I set off from Thakhek city, the capital of Khammouane Province, located next to Nakhon Phanom Province of Thailand. Riding a motorcycle through the famous limestone hills of this province felt like entering a world of pristine and peaceful nature.

The route to Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Cave is not difficult. Most roads are gravel that has been somewhat improved, but you must be cautious about the condition of the rented motorcycle because most here are Chinese-made and not as reliable as those at home. I encountered rear brake issues while riding on gravel roads, almost falling several times. I recommend that if you find a bike in poor condition, don't hesitate to change it because there is no repair insurance.

Nang Aen Cave and Chiang Liap Cave: Modest beauty full of charm

Nang Aen Cave is located not far from Thakhek city. It is not very large, but inside it is filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Its special feature is the rock layers that resemble a swiftlet's nest, and locals say that swallows regularly fly in and out of this cave, making me feel deeply connected to nature.

Chiang Liap Cave is nearby. It has beautiful cave walls and a viewpoint where you can see the surrounding limestone valley landscape widely. For photography lovers, this spot guarantees great angles for stunning photos.

Both caves are suitable for tourists who enjoy walking in nature and exploring caves in a peaceful atmosphere, unlike busy major tourist spots. This place reminded me of the simplicity of Khammouane Province, which still preserves its traditional charm well.

Besides caves, I also recommend stopping byThe Giant Wall of the Funan Kingdomwhich is nearby. It is a large stone wall that locals believe was built by ancient giants. Seeing it with my own eyes, I was amazed by its grandeur and mystery. It is a unique tourist attraction not to be missed.

Or if you want to enjoy beautiful Mekong River views, I suggest going toThakhekin the evening. There are riverside restaurants where you can relax, enjoy the view of the Thai side, and listen to traditional Lao music. The atmosphere was so pleasant that I wanted to stay until nightfall.

Local lifestyle and community to experience

I encourage travelers visiting Khammouane Province to open their hearts and talk with locals living around the caves. The elders here have fascinating stories about local history and traditional ways of life. It is a great opportunity to learn and experience the authentic Lao rural lifestyle.

During my trip, I tried local food around Thakhek, such as grilled chicken with Lao papaya salad, sticky rice, and spicy Lao papaya salad, which made me feel that visiting here is not only about enjoying nature but also tasting culture through food.

Tips for travelers

For those who want to enjoy cave exploration like mr.hotsia, I strongly recommend renting a motorcycle for convenience. Don't forget to check the bike's condition carefully before renting because there is no insurance, and you must repair it yourself if problems occur. Also, bring a flashlight because some caves have no internal lighting. Prepare clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or wet, as some caves have slippery paths or require wading through shallow water.
