Ban Hat Sa: A riverside village along the Nam Ou River in Phongsaly District, Laos

When talking about Ban Hat Sa, many people might get confused on Google Maps because there are two Ban Hat Sa villages in Laos: one in Luang Prabang Province and the other, which I, Mr.Hotsia, will tell you about today, is Ban Hat Sa in Phongsaly District, located about 10 kilometers from Phongsaly town, around the mountain near That Phou Fa.

The first time I traveled to Ban Hat Sa, I chose to walk from Phongsaly town, a distance of about 10 kilometers. But if you have a lot of luggage or want to save energy, I recommend taking a local minibus fromPhongsaly Bus StationThe morning bus departs around 8:30 AM. The road to Ban Hat Sa is not very good; it is a dusty gravel road because trucks carrying stones constantly pass by. The journey takes about 40 minutes, so you should prepare a face mask to protect against dust.

Ban Hat Sa is a small village on the banks of the Nam Ou River. It is the starting point for boat trips to Samphan and Khua towns, which are important towns in Phongsaly District. The boat fare is divided into two segments: from Ban Hat Sa to Samphan and from Samphan to Khua. Due to the Nam Ou dam blocking the way, passengers must take a local minibus for about 10 kilometers to cross the dam before continuing by boat. The boat fare is around 50,000 kip per segment.

I, Mr.Hotsia, have had the opportunity to take the boat from Ban Hat Sa twice. The first time was a long trip without changing vehicles. The second time, I had to take a minibus at Samphan before continuing by boat to Khua. I am not sure if the water level in the Nam Ou dam will still allow boat trips as before after the dam's full completion. But for now, Ban Hat Sa remains a very interesting starting point for this boat route.

Life and Lifestyle in Ban Hat Sa

Ban Hat Sa is not an abandoned or completely quiet village. There is a small pho noodle shop next to the pier and a fresh fruit stall where travelers can buy supplies for the boat trip if they haven't prepared food beforehand. I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend buying fruit or bread here to eat on the boat because some parts of the journey can take a long time and there are few restaurants along the way.

The atmosphere in the village remains simple and warm. Locals regularly travel between their homes and Phongsaly town. The main road in the village is a gravel road perfect for leisurely walks. For those wanting to truly experience local life, walking around the village offers a chance to see traditional Northern Lao lifestyles and to chat with locals, which I, Mr.Hotsia, consider a key charm of this place.

Boat Route and Khua Town

From Ban Hat Sa, the boat travels to Samphan, a small town on the Nam Ou River, and then continues to Khua. This spot is well-known among tourists traveling through Laos to Northern Vietnam. Khua was formerly called Kua, as I have previously written.Khua TownIt is a town with many hill tribe residents and is an important transit point for travelers heading to Vietnam, such as Dien Bien Phu and Sapa.

I, Mr.Hotsia, have taken the boat along the Nam Ou River from Ban Hat Sa to Khua and experienced the beautiful nature on both riverbanks as well as the simple and peaceful riverside lifestyle of the locals. There is also a story about a bridge being constructed over the Nam Ou River in Khua, which will make travel more convenient in the future.

Preparation and Travel Tips

For those planning to visit Ban Hat Sa, I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend preparing well for the journey because the route may not be as comfortable as in big cities. Some parts of the road are gravel and very dusty. Taking a local minibus from Phongsaly Bus Station will save time and energy. If you choose to walk, allow extra time and wear comfortable shoes.

Don't forget to bring a face mask to protect against dust. If you plan to take the boat, prepare some food or snacks because restaurants in the village are limited and the journey can be long. I, Mr.Hotsia, suggest buying fresh fruit at the small shops in Ban Hat Sa village to eat conveniently on the boat.

Ban Hat Sa Through the Eyes of Mr.Hotsia

Ban Hat Sa is not just a starting point for boat trips but also a village full of life and interesting stories. I, Mr.Hotsia, feel the peace and friendliness of the people here. Walking along the village’s main road, though dusty and gravel, is filled with touches of traditional lifestyles that are rare to find nowadays.

Many times when I traveled through Phongsaly town and Ban Hat Sa, I met kind and generous people. This place feels like a good resting point for travelers seeking tranquility and nature that remains pure. For those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities and look for an unpretentious adventure, Ban Hat Sa is the answer I, Mr.Hotsia, want to recommend.
