Guesthouses, Hotels, and Accommodation in Phongsaly: A Real Experience from mr.hotsia

When it comes to traveling to Phongsaly Province, Laos, one thing I, mr.hotsia, must prepare in advance is accommodation. Although Phongsaly is a small town that is not as developed as Luang Prabang or Vientiane, there are still simple and reasonably comfortable lodging options. On my latest visit to Phongsaly, I stayed at several guesthouses and small hotels in town, giving me detailed firsthand information and experience to share.

Variety of Accommodation in Phongsaly

In Phongsaly, there are about 5-6 small guesthouses and hotels scattered around that I personally saw. There may actually be more as they are spread across different parts of the town. The area I recommend staying is the town center of Phongsaly, especially near the Tourism Office, because it is convenient for travel and has reasonable amenities.

Here is a guesthouse namedPinekham Douang Naly Guesthousewhich is located just a little to the right past the Tourism Office, at a street corner. I like that it offers free Wi-Fi with an easy-to-remember network name, so no need to ask for details. The rooms are clean and the price is very affordable, about 80,000 kip per night, or approximately 320 baht only.

Experience Staying at San Saly Guesthouse

On my first night in Phongsaly, I did not stay at Pinekham Douang Naly because I didn’t know it was cheap and had Wi-Fi. Instead, I chose to stay atSan Saly GuesthouseThis accommodation is located just past the town center to the right, near the parking area for buses leaving town. The rooms are clean and the atmosphere is quiet, suitable for those who want to truly relax. The price is 400 baht per night (about 100,000 kip), but there is no Wi-Fi internet service.

Overall, accommodation in Phongsaly is not very hot because the surrounding air is already cool and comfortable. I have never seen air-conditioned rooms here; maybe they exist but I’m not sure because every time I come, I choose a regular room, and at night I still need a thick blanket.

Accommodation Precautions

For travelers arriving in Phongsaly in the evening or near nightfall, it is recommended to book accommodation in advance or research well because there are not many shuttle or public transport services at night. The distance from the bus station to most accommodations is quite far. I, mr.hotsia, recommend clearly telling the driver who picks you up from the bus station where you want to stay to avoid long walks or wasting time searching on your own.

Accommodation prices along the main road in Phongsaly are about 100,000 kip (400 baht) per night, but if you walk deeper into the alleys, such as at Pinekham Douang Naly, it is cheaper at 80,000 kip (320 baht), which is very good value for clean accommodation with Wi-Fi service.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle in Phongsaly

Phongsaly is a small town that still preserves the traditional lifestyle of Northern Lao people very well. Staying here is not just about sleeping in guesthouses but also experiencing the simple and warm atmosphere of the night market and having friendly conversations with locals. I once had the chance to visit the home of Elder Phufa and his wife, who are Chinese-Ho people in Phongsaly, and enjoyed simple, homemade local food that was very heartwarming (read the storyHaving Dinner with Elder Phufa)

Moreover, traveling in Phongsaly is quite convenient, especially if you stay in the town center, which is close to bus stops and the bus station. I, mr.hotsia, have already written about the Phongsaly bus station, noting that there are limited buses to Muang Khua and Dien Bien Phu (read details atPhongsaly Bus Station)

Connecting Travel and Accommodation in Phongsaly

For anyone planning to travel to Phongsaly, choosing accommodation is very important because this town does not yet have full amenities like larger cities. I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying in the town center as it is easier for travel, finding food, and convenient for connecting transport to nearby towns such as Muang Khua or onward to Dien Bien Phu in northern Vietnam (a popular route for adventure travelers). Summary of Accommodation Experience in Phongsaly with mr.hotsia

In summary, staying in Phongsaly is not difficult if you know how to choose and prepare in advance. From my real experience, mr.hotsia, accommodation in Phongsaly includes budget options at 80,000 kip (320 baht) with Wi-Fi, such as Pinekham Douang Naly, and clean accommodation without Wi-Fi at San Saly Guesthouse, priced at 100,000 kip (400 baht) per night. Additionally, the town’s atmosphere and the friendliness of the locals are charms that make me want to visit here many more times.
