Nam Ou Dam, Phongsaly: A River Cruise Route About to Change

When talking about river cruises on the Nam Ou River in Phongsaly Province, Laos, the nameNam Ou Damdefinitely comes to mind for travelers like me, mr.hotsia. Nam Ou Dam is not just an ordinary dam; it is a hydroelectric dam that plays an important role in the region, especially Nam Ou Hydroelectric Dams 5 and 6 located in Samphan and Phuengsali towns. When I traveled to Khua (also called Khua by many), I had the chance to cruise past the construction site of Nam Ou Dam 5, which was an unforgettable memory.

Nam Ou Dams 5 and 6 are located in Phongsaly Province. Actually, Phongsaly town is only about 80 kilometers from Khua, but the river route I cruised along the Nam Ou River winds through valleys and small streams, making the boat trip much longer than traveling by car.

Cruising Experience with mr.hotsia: Hatsa - Samphan - Khua

The first time I, mr.hotsia, cruised the Nam Ou River, I started atHatsawhich is an important boarding point for travelers wanting to cruise to Samphan and then to Khua. The boat trip is not a straight route as one might think; it is divided into two segments: the first from Hatsa to Samphan, and the second from Samphan to Khua.

The reason for splitting the trip into two segments is because the under-construction Nam Ou Dam blocks the river route. We had to disembark and switch to a local truck for about 10 kilometers to bypass the dam, then board a boat again to continue to Khua. This was a unique experience I had never encountered elsewhere.

The boat fare I paid was about 50,000 kip per segment, which is reasonable considering the beauty and tranquility of the natural scenery along the Nam Ou River. This route remains an important connection between towns in Phongsaly Province and is popular among adventurous travelers like me.

Nam Ou Dam and the Future of Tourism in Eastern Laos

In 2014, when I visited, the construction of Nam Ou Dam was well underway. The dam is located about 30-40 kilometers upstream from Samphan town and was expected to be completed within five years, meaning around 2018.

What I wonder and have no clear answer to is whether the dam will create a large reservoir above it and whether the river cruise routes I used will still be navigable. This route is an important and charming tourist attraction.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend that anyone who enjoys river cruising and adventure on this river come visit before the image of the Nam Ou River changes. I believe the dam will definitely change the local way of life and the river cruise routes.

Khua: A Small Interesting Town in Phongsaly Province

When talking about Nam Ou Dam, I cannot help but mention Khua (also called Khua), a town in Phongsaly Province I have visited. Not far from the dam, Khua is a small town located on the Nam Ou River and serves as an important passage for travelers going from Laos to northern Vietnam via Dien Bien Phu and Sapa.

I have written about my travel experiences and the local way of life here in the articleTraveling KhuaIf you are interested in the journey from Khua to northern Vietnam, I have also summarized it inTraveling from Khua, Laos to Dien Bien Phuas well.

Khua also has the charm of hill tribe lifestyles around the town, local restaurants, and small markets. I once enjoyed simple but delicious fried egg with sticky rice here (if you want to see the atmosphere, check outthe Fried Egg with Sticky Rice clipthat I made myself).

Changing Travel and Convenience in Phongsaly and Khua

For travelers wanting to visit Phongsaly Province, traveling from Chai or Udomxai to Phongsaly and Khua is not too difficult. Although there is no daily bus service yet, there are vehicles and boats available for convenience.

I have recorded in the articleTraveling to Phongsalythat the Phongsaly bus station is about 4 kilometers from the town center and there are connecting vehicles to other towns such as Udomxai, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane.

However, cruising the Nam Ou River from Hatsa to Samphan and Khua remains an interesting option that I often recommend because it offers close encounters with pristine nature and the riverside lifestyle of local people.

mr.hotsia's Note: Memories Before the Dam Changes Everything

From my real experience cruising and traveling along the Nam Ou River in Phongsaly Province, I clearly see that the construction of Nam Ou Dam will inevitably change the way of life and the landscape. I invite everyone to experience the natural atmosphere and traditional lifestyle that still exist before the dam is completed.

If you love adventure, river cruising, and want to learn about the lives of people in Phongsaly Province, I recommend planning your trip here soon and don't forget to visitKhuaa small town full of charm and stories waiting for you to discover.
