Traveling from Oudomxay to Muang Khua with real experiences from mr.hotsia
If you are in Muang Xai, Oudomxay Province, and want to try traveling to Muang Khua, one of the cities that still preserves the tranquility and natural beauty of northern Laos, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my real experience traveling this route.
Starting fromOudomxay Bus StationThis is an important hub in this province. Although it is not as bustling as cities in Thailand like Khon Kaen or Korat, it is very convenient for travelers because the station is located in the city center. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. I once stayed at a hotel across the street and used their restroom before boarding the bus, which made things convenient and saved a lot of expenses.
The bus departs from Oudomxay Bus Station once daily at 8:30 AM. In the afternoon, if there are more passengers, an additional bus will run. The buses are in good condition, not cramped, and not overcrowded, making the journey comfortable. The route passes through mountains and lush forests with beautiful scenery on both sides, making me almost forget I was on a highway.
The route to Muang Khua follows the same path I took to Phongsaly (for those interested, you can readBus from Oudomxay to Dien Bien Phu, Vietnamwhere I shared some experiences), but there is a right turn to Muang Khua about 30 kilometers ahead. Phongsaly turns left and takes several more hours. The bus ride takes about 3 hours only.
One thing I really liked about this trip was the peace and natural beauty along the way, still maintaining green forests, fresh air, and no heavy truck traffic like in big cities. It felt like entering another world.
Arriving at Muang Khua, a small but charming town
Upon arrival in Muang Khua, the bus stops at the bus station, which has now been relocated about 3 kilometers from the town center. I had to take a small local pickup truck into town for 20 baht, which is very affordable for this distance.
Muang Khua is a small town that still preserves the simplicity of rural life in northern Laos. You will see villagers still engaged in agriculture and quiet trade. The small market offers seasonal fresh produce and local foods to try. I ordered grilled chicken with Lao papaya salad and hot sticky rice at a roadside restaurant here. The flavors were spicy and fresh, a taste hard to find in big cities.
If you have time, don’t forget to stroll along the small streets of the town, where wooden houses and old temples hide in a peaceful atmosphere. I walked around taking photos and chatting with locals who were genuinely friendly and smiling. This is a feeling I really enjoy when visiting northern Laos.
