Travel to Oudomxay City, Oudomxay Province, Laos with mr.hotsia
When talking about the central city of northern Laos, which is an important route to Luang Prabang, Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, or even Huaphan, the name ofOudomxay Cityin Oudomxay Province is a destination I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting at least once in a lifetime. This visit was a short trip for me, just one night before continuing by bus to Phongsaly. But I got to experience the true atmosphere of a city that is important as a hub in upper Laos. I saw the lifestyles and cultures of diverse ethnic groups including Hmong, Mien, Phu Thai, and Akha, totaling 23 ethnic groups.
Why Oudomxay?
This city has a population of nearly three hundred thousand people, and the Bang River flows through the city center. It is an important river that joins the Mekong River at Pak Bang (also called Pak Paeng by many), a resting point before taking the slow boat from Huay Sai to Luang Prabang. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled this slow boat route and plan to return to cruise from Huay Sai and capture images at Pak Bang for the next trip. But this time, I chose to explore Oudomxay City first.
The atmosphere of Chai City and traveling
Oudomxay City is not luxurious or flashy like Luang Namtha, but it has the charm of a small, peaceful, and simple town. Traveling is convenient. The bus stationOudomxayis located in the city center, not far from the hotel. I, mr.hotsia, traveled from Luang Namtha and arrived in the evening when it was raining, so I had to check in first. But early the next morning, I woke up around 5 a.m. to walk to the morning market and photograph the local life at the fresh market here.
Oudomxay Morning Market – The Heart of the City
MarketOudomxayis one of my favorite places. The market is divided into two main parts: outside are stalls selling fresh vegetables, fish, and fresh products from villagers; inside are permanent stalls selling dried foods and long-lasting snacks. The morning market here remains simple, lively, and filled with warm smiles from vendors, many of whom are ethnic minorities still wearing traditional clothing. I recommend waking up early to visit this fresh market to truly absorb the atmosphere and lifestyle of the city.
Sticky Rice Alms Giving – The Morning Life of Oudomxay People
After visiting the morning market, I, mr.hotsia, walked back into town to capture the sticky rice alms giving ceremony in the morning, a tradition well preserved by the Lao people. It was a warm and faithful scene, peaceful with locals dressed beautifully and attentively performing the ritual. It made me feel I truly experienced the essence of northern Lao culture.
Phou Phra That – The Viewpoint and Sacred Site in the City Center
One place not to miss when visiting Oudomxay City isPhou Phra Thatlocated on a hill in the city center. At the top is a standing Buddha statue in the blessing posture, newly completed in 2009 and open for worship. This spot is not only an important religious site for the Lao people but also an excellent viewpoint where you can clearly see the cityscape of Oudomxay and the surrounding complex mountain ranges. I, mr.hotsia, hired a tuk-tuk for a reasonable price (about 80 baht) to visit the temple and enjoy the view. I highly recommend everyone visiting this city to go up here because the breeze at Phou Phra That is cool and the city view from above is unforgettable.
Restaurants and Evening Atmosphere in Oudomxay City
Although Oudomxay City is not as lively as Luang Namtha or Luang Prabang, it has a fair number of restaurants and accommodations, mostly near the bus station. Prices are affordable, around 200-300 baht per night, often with internet service. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy the atmosphere by the Bang River flowing through the city center. There are small beer bars near the bridge neck, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the breeze in the evening. There is also a karaoke bar, but I have not had the chance to try it yet.
Travel Routes and Connections to Other Cities
Due to its location as a hub city, Oudomxay has bus connections to important cities such as Luang Prabang, Pak Bang, Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, and Muang Khua, as well as cross-border routes to Boten and Lào Cai in China. For those interested, you can check route details and ticket prices in the articleOudomxay Bus Stationthat I wrote earlier. Travel here is convenient and hassle-free.
Summary of Impressions from Oudomxay City by mr.hotsia
For me, mr.hotsia, although the time in Oudomxay City was limited, I experienced the true lifestyle and atmosphere of the city. It is not just a transit point to other cities but has its own charm. The traditional fresh market, the impressive sticky rice alms giving ceremony, and the beautiful view from Phou Phra That are highlights not to miss. If you have a chance to travel northern Laos, I recommend stopping by Oudomxay City as I did. You will find that visiting a small city like this brings happiness and memorable stories beyond what you expect.
