Tham Than Kaisone, Phromvihane: History and Journey to Hua Phan Province, Laos

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. I had the opportunity to travel to Hua Phan Province, Laos to visit an important historical site calledTham Than Kaisone, Phromvihanelocated in Viengchai town. This is not just an ordinary cave but was the hideout and workplace of the Lao leader during the Second Indochina War, also known in the West as the Vietnam War. This place is full of stories reflecting the hardships and resilience of the Lao people during wartime.

Atmosphere and Journey to Tham Than Kaisone

I started my journey from Sam Nuea, a small town in Hua Phan Province with pleasant weather year-round, situated over 1,200 meters above sea level. It is an important connection point before heading to Viengchai. Sam Nuea town has a peaceful atmosphere, friendly people, a small community market, and internet cafes ready to serve visitors. Additionally, there istransportation information for Sam Nueathat I have shared before, which makes traveling onward to Viengchai and Tham Than Kaisone much easier.

From Sam Nuea, I traveled by car along winding roads with beautiful limestone mountain scenery, taking about 3-4 hours to reach Viengchai town. This town is surrounded by lakes and mountains, peaceful and uniquely charming. Most people still live simply. Viengchai has a morning and evening market in the same area. I took a walk and talked with locals who earnestly shared the importance of Tham Than Kaisone during the war.Read about walking around Viengchai townhere.

History of Tham Than Kaisone, Phromvihane

This cave was originally called “Pha Yon” because locals used ropes to lower themselves to collect honey inside the cave. In 1964, the great Lao leaderKaisone Phromvihanemoved in to use this cave as his workplace and shelter from U.S. air attacks during the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War.

I explored two connected caves about 140 meters long and found that the cave was adapted into a simple but complete workplace and living quarters. There was a meeting room where Mr. Kaisone sat at the head of the table with colleagues and other leaders such as Chairman Suphanouvong and Mr. Nouhak. There was also a recreation room for sports like ping pong, a favorite of Mr. Kaisone, as well as bedrooms, bathrooms, and a research room.

Interestingly, this cave has asafe roomwith an air filtration system for shelter during chemical weapon attacks by U.S. planes. Standing in that room, I felt the determination and steadfastness of the Lao leader who had to live in this cave for over ten years without the conveniences of a big city.

Lifestyle and Historical Significance

I spoke with locals and caretakers of the cave and learned that Kaisone Phromvihane is considered a hero of Laos. The Lao government honors him greatly, with monuments in Vientiane and Sam Nuea, as well as preserving this cave as an important historical site.

During the war, Viengchai and Tham Than Kaisone were main strongholds for the Lao army and allies. As I looked around the meeting table and rooms, I saw the simplicity of life in the cave filled with the aura of the past and felt the determination of leaders facing hardships without giving up.
