Scenic drive to Sam Neua, Houaphanh Province, Laos by mr.hotsia

After exploring the beauty and experiencing life in Phonsavan, visiting the Lao Rocket Festival exhibition, enjoying the Plain of Jars, and fully exploring the war-torn city of Xieng Khouang, today I am ready to continue my journey to Sam Neua, Houaphanh Province, a town that many may not know well and is considered the most rural area in Laos.

Sam Neua is located deep near the Vietnam border. The travel route is quite challenging and surrounded by mountains and forests. The journey is not easy, and very few tourists get to experience this town, especially Thai tourists, who are almost countable. For me, mr.hotsia, it is a special opportunity to experience the atmosphere and real life of the people here.

Sam Neua is home to two main Lao ethnic groups. The first group is the Hmong living in the high mountains, and the second is the general Lao people who speak a dialect similar to the Isan language of Thailand. The latter group lives in the town itself. The town's history is linked to past wars, as it was once the base of Lao leaders in caves during the war with America. This place holds deep meaning and is full of fascinating stories.

For the trip from Phonsavan to Sam Neua, I chose to drive through Nam Neun town, a charming rest stop with interesting attractions such as hot springs and the popular tourist spot, Vang Thong town, where many foreign tourists come to relax. I arrived at Nam Neun around early afternoon. The village is not very large, with plenty of food options unlike when I traveled to Phongsaly. One noticeable thing is that here they do not sell regular rice; only pho and sticky rice are available.

From Nam Neun to Sam Neua is about 90 kilometers, but most of the route is mountainous, so it takes a bit longer to reach the destination. Normally, long car rides in Laos are not a problem for me because the weather is cool and comfortable, and the views along the way are beautiful, allowing me to enjoy the lush green scenery of nature and small villages nestled on the hillsides.

Arriving in Sam Neua in the evening, the bus station is located on a hill overlooking a small town with rice fields in the center and the Nam Sam River flowing through, creating a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere beyond my expectations. Sam Neua is much smaller and noticeably quieter than Phongsaly. After a long day of travel, I quickly found accommodation to rest and prepare for exploring the town the next day.

Sam Neua: A rural land with unique charm and interest

At an elevation of about 1,200 meters above sea level, the weather in Sam Neua is cool and comfortable all year round. I traveled here in mid-May; the weather was not hot, and the nights were cold enough to need a quilt, giving me a distinctly different experience from northeastern Thailand.

Sam Neua is a new town relocated from Vieng Chai just a few years ago. The majority of the population are lowland Lao and Hmong, with a small number of Black Tai and Red Tai people. The town has a moderate level of convenience, such as two internet cafes, a Lao Development Bank branch, and the first ATM machine being installed when I visited.

Food and lifestyle in Sam Neua

One thing I, mr.hotsia, am very interested in is the local food of Sam Neua. Here, there is a rare and unusual dish called “water centipede,” known locally as “Kan To,” which is long with many legs and lives only in clean water. This water centipede is made into a steamed dish called “Pla Puhn,” a popular food among Sam Neua locals. Even people from Vientiane who have tried it are fond of it and look for opportunities to return and eat it again. For those interested in the story and taste of the water centipede, you can read more atTaking you to eat water centipede at Sam Neua marketby me

Additionally, the local food is simple and flavorful. I often see villagers living simply in the market and along the streets. Talking with locals helped me understand their connection to nature and the town’s history more deeply.

Routes and ways to travel to Sam Neua

Regarding travel to Sam Neua, there are two main ways: by plane and by car. Lao Airlines operates flights from Vientiane to Sam Neua three times a week, taking only a few hours. Sam Neua airport is about 3 kilometers from the town center, which is very convenient for tourists seeking speed.Sam Neua transport informationI will provide detailed information for those interested.

For car travel, the drive from Vientiane to Sam Neua takes about 22 hours. This route passes through several towns such as Xieng Khouang and Phonsavan, which are interesting rest stops and scenic spots. I chose this route to experience the atmosphere and lifestyle along the way, which is a more profound and different experience than flying.

Summary of experience and feelings from the journey

For me, mr.hotsia, traveling to Sam Neua by car is not tiring but a journey full of impressions. The mountain views and small villages helped me experience true peace and nature. I recommend friends who love adventure and studying local lifestyles to visit here at least once.
