Laos Boat Trip 1/9: Journey to Ban Tha Suang, Muang Hongsa, Laos

I, mr.hotsia, have just completed a boat trip along the northern Laos side of the Mekong River, arriving atBan Tha Suangin Muang Hongsa. This was my first destination on this Laos boat trip. The first feeling was peacefulness by the riverside, still raw and full of the true charm of Lao village life. It’s not just the beautiful images seen in guidebooks, but a real feeling experienced by sitting on the boat cruising along the wide and deep Mekong River.

Ban Tha Suang is located in Muang Hongsa, an ancient town on the northern Mekong River in Laos. It is a town that has preserved the traditional Lao way of life completely. Here you will find villagers living simply, fishing with traditional tools, riverside farming, and a local market that still maintains its original atmosphere very well.

To get to Ban Tha Suang, I, mr.hotsia, chose to travel by boat from Muang Hongsa, a route full of stories and impressive scenery. Sitting slowly on the boat, watching the views on both sides of the Mekong River filled with forests and small villages, made me feel like traveling back in time to an era when travel was truly challenging and exciting.

Lifestyle and Culture at Ban Tha Suang

When the boat docked, I, mr.hotsia, went down to experience the small community here. Most villagers speak the local Lao dialect and wear simple yet distinctive traditional clothing. I had the chance to walk through the morning market, which offered fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, and handmade local products. Everything looked fresh and clearly reflected the sufficiency lifestyle of the villagers.

At this market, I tasted authentic Lao-style breakfast such as Khao Jee, hot sticky rice served with chili paste and fresh vegetables. There was also grilled chicken marinated with fragrant Lao spices, finished with sweet seasonal fruits. These experiences made me feel truly connected to the community’s way of life, just as I had described in previous articles.Laos Boat Trip 3/9: Villagers Preparing Breakfast, Authentic Lao Lifestyle, Muang Hongsa, LaosAs I wrote before

Travel and Atmosphere in Muang Hongsa

Muang Hongsa is a town of historical and cultural importance in northern Laos. I, mr.hotsia, have experienced the market and community atmosphere here before on a previous boat trip (read atLaos Boat Trip 2: Raw and Unmatched, Kha Mu Local Market Deep in the Forest by the Mekong River in Laos) but this time, coming to Ban Tha Suang showed me a quieter and simpler side of Muang Hongsa.

The boat journey on this route took a suitable amount of time, allowing me to observe life along the Mekong River banks, including gardening, fishing by villagers, as well as water birds and wildlife living in the nearby forest. Especially during the soft morning and evening sunlight, the golden sky reflecting on the Mekong’s surface created such beautiful scenes that I had to take out my camera several times to capture them.

Recommendations for Those Wanting to Try Laos Boat Trips
