Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today I will take you deep into southern Laos... but not just Laos alone, because this time I am invading the Khmer kitchen in an area not many people know about. My destination is a “Khmer Kitchen” hidden in the southern Laos border, which has become a fascinating crossroads of food culture and lifestyle.

Before telling you about the food and lifestyle, I want to mention that this journey was not as easy as typical reviews. There are no paved roads here, only dusty dirt paths and lush green forests. The breeze is cool and refreshing, even under the heat of the southern Laos sun.

Journey to the Khmer Kitchen

I started from a nearby big city before venturing into the border area filled with ancient Khmer villages. Traveling by shared pickup truck combined with walking into small villages where locals still live traditionally. The atmosphere here is similar — raw and wild with a lifestyle deeply connected to nature.

Upon arriving at the Khmer kitchen village, the first thing I noticed was the aroma of herbs and spices filling the air. The simple local eateries looked unadorned but the flavors were intensely delicious. I tried “Khmer curry” which differs from typical Lao curry because it includes turmeric, galangal, and fresh kaffir lime leaves, creating a tangy and spicy balanced taste. There was also “grilled herb fish” made from large Mekong River fish grilled with banana leaves until fragrant.

Another dish that impressed me equally was “Khmer papaya salad.” The flavor here is distinctly different from Lao or Thai papaya salad. It uses dried chili and fresh tomatoes pounded together, topped with roasted peanuts and fresh lime, delivering a bold traditional taste just like I encountered inMekong River fish curryin Laos that I previously explored.
