Backpacking Southern Laos Cambodia 17: Closing the Legend of Long Rak Hut, Ratanakiri Tribe

My mr.hotsia journey in Southern Laos this time took me to the border between Laos and Cambodia. Our destination was “Long Rak Hut,” a small hut hidden deep in the forest of the Ratanakiri tribe, an indigenous group still living traditionally. Experience a simple lifestyle amidst abundant nature and rare tranquility in this era.

Before reaching Long Rak Hut, I trekked through the forest and cruised the Mekong River. This route was full of challenges and enchanting beauty, similar to what I previously shared inBoat Trip in Laos 1: Abandoning the Boat - An Adventure into the Deep Mekong ForestUnlike any other, Long Rak Hut is located in a hard-to-reach area. It requires help from local villagers and guides familiar with the forest trails and deep waterways.

Long Rak Hut and Stories from the Ratanakiri Tribe

Long Rak Hut is a small accommodation built from bamboo and leaves, nestled in the lush rainforest of the Ratanakiri tribe. This place is not just lodging but a site where I learned about the tribe’s lifestyle, beliefs, and culture, which they have preserved firmly.

I met warm and smiling villagers who welcomed me. They took me to see their herbal garden used for healing and tribal rituals, and demonstrated how to make traditional tools used daily, such as weaving, basketry, and traditional hunting methods.

Though simple, the peaceful and natural atmosphere at Long Rak Hut made me forget the chaos of the big city completely. The birdsong and flowing streams created relaxation and renewed the spirit of a weary traveler.

Travel and Preparation for Visiting the Deep Forest City

Before arriving at Long Rak Hut, I had to prepare well, including food supplies, trekking gear, and clothing suitable for the weather and rough terrain. The journey here is not as easy as it seems, involving dirt roads and many streams, sometimes wading through water and climbing rocks. Importantly, having a local guide familiar with the routes is essential for safety.

I recommend bringing simple food supplies like sticky rice, grilled pork, and local fruits available at nearby markets, which provide good energy along the way. Or, if you want a deeper local experience, check outWarm and Satisfying Meal with the Laotian People of Ban Tha Suangin Hongsa town, where authentic Laotian food can be tasted before setting off.

Lifestyle and Surrounding Local Markets

On the way to Long Rak Hut, I stopped by a local market called “Khamouk Market,” which is unique and charming unlike any other market in Laos, as I previously shared inKhamouk Market in the Deep Forest by the Mekong River in LaosHere, you can find genuine local products including fresh vegetables and fruits from farms, as well as beautiful handwoven textiles and basketry.

The market atmosphere was lively with people wearing traditional tribal costumes, preserving their identity fully. I tried local dishes like the spicy “Laotian Papaya Salad” and grilled chicken marinated with spices until tender and fragrant. This is the charm of traveling that I, mr.hotsia, love: immersing in the real lifestyle of locals, not just passing by to see the scenery.

Summary of Experiences and Reflections from Visiting Long Rak Hut

This trip to Long Rak Hut in the Ratanakiri tribe allowed me, mr.hotsia, to appreciate the beauty of nature and the traditional lifestyle still existing in the modern world. Although mysterious and hard to access, it is full of warmth and memorable stories.

If you love adventure and want to experience real, unfiltered life, I recommend planning a visit here once. You will realize that this world still has peaceful and profound corners waiting for us to discover.
