Visiting Mother's Hometown in Lao PDR: Hosting a Village-wide Children's Party for Only 20,000 Kip
This time, mr.hotsia had the opportunity to visit his mother's hometown in Lao PDR, which was a very special experience because he got to experience the true way of life of the villagers in a small village that still firmly preserves its traditional customs and culture. This place is not a big city, nor does it have a famous province name to remember, but the atmosphere and the smiles of the people here are what made mr.hotsia want to keep these memories in his heart.
One morning, mr.hotsia had the chance to join the “Leang Ka Raem” event, a small children's party in the village to show the love and care from the elders. All the children in the village were gathered at the village square with simple food full of warmth and meaning.
The cost of hosting the Ka Raem party this time felt very low compared to the happiness seen. The children ate hot sticky rice with grilled fish and fresh vegetables grown by the villagers themselves, including snacks made from local ingredients such as spicy yet mellow Lao papaya salad. Importantly, the total cost did not exceed 20,000 kip, or about 80 Thai baht only.
Traveling to this village was not very convenient, requiring passing through dirt roads and narrow streets that mr.hotsia had to drive carefully. But once arrived, everything was very worthwhile because he saw a simple yet happy way of life that is hard to find in big cities.
mr.hotsia also talked with the village elders who shared stories about the Ka Raem tradition passed down through many generations. It is a ceremony that expresses love and bonding among community members and passes on warmth for children to grow up with value.
Besides the Ka Raem event, mr.hotsia explored a nearby local market full of fresh local products including freshwater fish, fresh vegetables, and spices used in authentic Lao cooking. The atmosphere here is similar toKhamouk Market by the Mekong Riverwhich mr.hotsia visited on a previous Laos trip, except this market is smaller and focuses more on community spirit.
The Lao food in this village was also one of the impressive experiences mr.hotsia will never forget, such as Gaeng Bok Chak Khamu, which he tried on theMekong River Cruise Tripin Houaphanh. The bitterness yet mellow flavor of the curry made him feel the pure naturalness that the villagers still preserve.
One memorable moment was sitting and eating sticky rice dipped in jaew sauce with the village children, accompanied by their laughter and bright eyes. Though a small thing, for mr.hotsia this was the true image of happiness without needing any luxury.
After the Ka Raem party, mr.hotsia had the chance to stroll along the river near the village, seeing villagers using wooden boats to paddle across and catch fish with traditional methods similar to those seen inLaos River Cruise Fishing with Large Fish NetsThis whole atmosphere made him feel like traveling back in time to the roots of life.
For anyone wanting to experience authentic Lao life without embellishment, mr.hotsia recommends visiting a small village like this. You don’t need a big budget, just an open heart ready to embrace new experiences and the sincerity of the people here.
For those interested in seeing the real atmosphere from this trip, you can watch theYouTube clip “Visiting Mother's Hometown in Lao PDR: Hosting a Village-wide Children's Party for Only 20,000 Kip”which clearly conveys the sights and sounds reflecting mr.hotsia’s feelings.
Finally, mr.hotsia would like to say that visiting his mother's hometown in Lao PDR is not just traveling, but learning and understanding another side of life that truly preserves the beauty and warmth of Lao culture.
