Backpacking Southern Laos and Cambodia 23: Skoang – A small village hidden in nature
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to experience the chill atmosphere of Skoang village, a small village located in southern Laos. Although it’s not as famous as big cities, it has a charm and simplicity that anyone who visits will instantly fall in love with.
Skoang is a village that still firmly preserves the traditional lifestyle of the Lao people. There are no big paved roads, no noisy lights, only nature surrounding and the friendly way of life of the locals. I traveled here with the intention to truly experience the local atmosphere, which is clearly different from typical tourist cities.
Journey to Skoang – An adventure starting from the first step
Traveling to Skoang is not as easy as going to big cities. I chose to travel by boat and on foot to truly experience the riverside life along the Mekong River and the deep forest. Along the way, you will pass bythe Mekong Riverwhich is vast and peaceful. The atmosphere on both sides of the river is filled with Lao villages and lush forests that remain abundant.
I recommend preparing yourself both physically and mentally because visiting Skoang is like entering a world where time stands still. There is no mobile signal, no fancy shops, only simplicity and warmth from the people here.
Local lifestyle and culture in Skoang
Walking along the small alleys in the village, I saw a simple daily life full of warmth. Most villagers are farmers, growing rice, vegetables, and raising animals. Some still use traditional methods, such as fishing in the river with local fish traps, which I have also captured inBoat Trip in Laos 3as well.
Besides seeing the lifestyle, I also tasted the local food here, which is simple but flavorful. Whether it’s spicy Lao papaya salad, fragrant grilled chicken, or sticky rice that is the heart of every meal. Eating with the locals in this relaxed atmosphere makes you feel like you’re truly home.
Local market and traditional food
Skoang doesn’t have a big market like tourist cities but has a small market where locals exchange goods, fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits, and special handmade foods. I walked around looking at food laid out on mats on the ground. Some items look ordinary but have outstanding flavors, such as grilled chicken marinated with local herbs or freshly hand-pounded papaya salad.
If you like the raw Lao market atmosphere, I recommend comparing it with the experience fromKha Mu local market deep in the forest by the Mekong Riverwhich I have written about. Both places offer different feelings but are full of genuine rural Lao charm.
Feelings after experiencing Skoang
After spending several days in Skoang, I clearly felt that visiting such a small village is not just a rest but a learning experience of a simple yet profound way of life. It is a pause in time and a true connection with nature and people.
For anyone looking for a journey different from the main tourist routes and wanting to experience the raw and simple side of southern Laos, Skoang is the answer I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend.
